need help with editor

this is driving me nuts - is there a way to stop the editor from automatically snapping to the middle point of a line? (like by holding alt or something).

i'm trying to do some delicate details, but instead of snapping to the grid, my line will keep snapping to the center point of the other line.

please halp :)

I never found a way, just learned to live with it. Just snap it on the middle, move the vertex to where you want it and move on.

    awesome thanks evil bob.

    one more question :) :

is there an easy way to delete duplicate vertexes? there is seems to be an issue with the editor that it doesnt let you create a face, and it seems this is because you have 2 vertexes on the same point in space, so you have to delete one - and this can be ery time consuming if you are creating a complex shape, but even for a simple shape its never easy to tell which vertex is the duplicate.

Try using the "Weld vertices" command.

Maybe I can get a cookie too... The "Weld Vertices" command is only accessible while using the Select tool (even though you can select vertices while holding other tools). So if things aren't welding, try hitting space bar to switch back to that before doing it.

Another tip... Select all, put it in a layer, and then make the layer invisible while it is all selected. This is how you can find any stray lines and delete them. I'm not sure exactly what causes these stray lines to appear in the first place (I think occasionally I get them while welding vertices), but I've had lots of issues creating faces due to this in the past.

    cookies for all! :)

thanks for that info, the editor sure has its quirks - i'be made maybe 1/2 a room and its taken me about 16 hrs thanks to little annoyances (probably doesnt help that i didnt read the manual either..)

will post screenshot in the screenshot thread soon, or maybe next weekend depending on how it all turns out.

Have you watch fmpone's videos? They really helped me deal with the quirks of this editor. I don't think he talks about welding, but I was so lost about how to create faces before these videos.

Many people report having to fight the editor. Moreover, I'm heavily struggling with it myself. From what the other mappers told me, it's a matter of getting used to it. Good luck!

There's no way to change which axis is being used for the move tool is there? So if you rotate a room by 45º, no way to make it so moving on the X still moves it Left/Right relative to the room?

If not, what techniques do people use for angled areas to manage this? It seems like if you have a rotated room or hallway, you really need to have it all in a separate .level file where you do the work, and then just copy it in and rotate it after you've made changes.

nope no way to to do it natively.

the only thing i can think of is to create a square, and then use the line tool to make a 90deg diamond shape inside the square, then just work purely with the edges and faces and the grid should align itself to your faces, but sometimes you still just need to measure out and draw vertices on edges, and then just work with only the vertices instead of the grid, its a very manual process, but it works :)
