It is a lot cleaner and easy to navigate for first-time users.
Which honestly is the important demographic to appeal to at this point, since those of us whom are already here already know how to get around.
An option in the Control Panel would probably satisfy both parties, but that requires time/work not spent on Game Development, so maybe it would satisfy neither.

It's not easier and it doesn't need to be.
First time NS2 players are not first time forum users.
As Zastels says, I do not think it is easier. Most people are familiar with forums, straying away from the typical forum layout makes it more confusing. I am referring to how the main discussion forum is actually a subforum.

With release time rapidly approaching, more and more sub-forums are going to appear. It is only a matter of time, so why not get the re-organisation done now?
You can display a lots of board on one page, you really need this kind of hierarchy if you have a huge number of boards. To separate the different section you just need a clear visual separation.
You can use hierarchy for less important board, for example if there was 10 boards with different languages, you could put all of them in a section. But all the important ones (discussion, mapping, modding, help, ..) should be directly visible on the first page.
Yea, I think you should be able to see all the forums on the one page, without having to click and then click again. I know you can click on the sub-forums but you can't tell how many posts are in each or see the last post from the main page. I'd rather be able to see everything on one page and have to scroll down than have things hidden requiring multiple clicks to access the same information.
At least the main forum (general discussion) should be visible from the front of the forums rather than as a sub-forum.
I also think having less sub-forums is better. Too many and they can lie empty and segregate the discussion too much.

Browsing this forum on a mobile device is now significantly more difficult.
:)
or linux/Mac-OS sub-forums,
or customisation sub-forums,

Nope.
Not ghosts. At all.
Uh... on a completely unrelated note, does anyone know the area code on 555-2368?
