A fork in NS2, and why we should support it.

How can the community helps NS2 variants get played.
Just to entertain the idea...

How could we(the community) and UWE support NS2 variants to a greater degree? What could be improved, or what opportunities might be missed in the current state?

If someone creates a change to NS2, should anyone but the player base decide whether it should be played or not?

Scenario:

Game A is the main developer supported game.
However Game B makes changes to Game A, something that the main developer supported game doesn't agree with.

Should it be allowed, censored, ignored, or spotlighted(given support in some form)?

Should players ultimately decide whether it gets played? (Based on their interest/traffic generated while playing that change)

What if the variant could become more popular than Game A?

UWE is very open to modding. I think the simple solution is to provide a "vanilla" option in the server browser. if you join a vanilla server, you get the vanilla experience. if you join a mod server, you're entering the Wild West, all bets are off. Maybe I'd like to see the name of the mod being run so that if its enjoyable you can refer to it.

That'd be a nice feature to have in the server browser as well, or as a display once you join the server. "X mod enabled."

In other words, servers dictate what are on servers. Sounds good to me!

I reckon an option (maybe a Lua-funcion) to specificy which mods are running on that server, which will subsequently be exposed via the query-responder to the client's server-browser. I believe it was mentioned in the Q&A. Such a system however would be based on trust, as you cannot correctly determine whether or not a server is vanilla (in the gameplay-sense).

This has already happened. The HBZ server implements their own balance tweaks and number changes when they think the current build has a glaring problem. Its a bit unfair, since you don't know the change has happened until you encounter it in game, but I've never seen anyone leave because of it.

While I am happy they are able to do this, it is not a good thing for the beta as a whole. How can people recommend changes/report problems if they do not know what is vanilla or not.

Yep, pros and cons. Ideally the people reporting issues know what they are talking about, and therefore can identify fundamental changes in the game when they encounter them. Those that cannot, well, we really shouldn't be taking them too seriously anyway.

The reason I even bring it up is it did occur before. When lerk bile bomb was initially introduced, the damage on it was bugged. However, HBZ fixed this. Then there were huge arguments on the forums between people who didnt realize HBZ was modified and others.

This is why they should do this: http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/forums/in...howtopic=117980
