Best combat flight simulator

What do you lot think of as the best combat flight simulator around? I have heared a lot of good stuff about falcon 4 but it is a tad old. M$ combat flight simulator 2 is okish but I'm wanting a modern sim. I BOUGHT (A rare event for me) Independence war 2- Edge of Chaos and have finished it and I am looking for a new sim.

Try and get hold of a game called Hardwar. Its a sci-fi flight sim in a Mars city, but you can do whatever you want. There are missions, but instead you can deal narcotics, supply weapon parts, even just supply pure water to the slums if you are so inclined. Or you can go around shooting pirates and selling off the scrap metal, its immensly open ended. Even though its fairly old, its still a classic.

It is an old WW2 flight sim *i know its not modern like you asked.*


IL2 is an amazing game and with stalls and wind and everything on you will accautly have to learn about avation in order too clear your six or take one out.  Very good game.  I just dont see why anyone would want a modern game.  You see someone, you "lock on", you fire a missle, guy dies. Wee! Fun.

Thanks for all the replys. Freespace 1 came bundled with my Logitech wingman force, I re-installed it 3 days ago and uninstalled it 10 minutes later. The graphics were just so CRAP compared to I-War 2 and Freespace 2. It WAS a really great game in its time though. I had the OEM version of freespace 2 but I seem to have misplaced it. I played hardwar from start to finish and found it was an incredibly good game, if not a bit small and lacking in the graphics department. For those that want the full version there is a freeware (and legal) patch that upgrades the demo to the full version minus the missions. I love it when you have a cargo hold full of narcotics and making a drug run into the mug-lair pirate bars. I-War 2 was very simalar but with jaw-removal graphics and an annoyingly realistic physics model. The cutscenes were incredibly corney though. I'll have a look at those others you mentioned.

I just wish I-War2 would work completely on my machine. I've got this weird bug where I start pausing for minutes at a time after a bit of playing. The pauses always correspond with the speech. Ah well. I'll have to try Hardwar.

I wonder why everyone stopped producing space sims. It really annoys me. I loved games like the X-wing and WC series, but now it seems like the entire genre is just gone <!--emo&:(--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/sad.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':('><!--endemo--> Does anybody now of any space sims in production or should I just try to find freespace 2 somewhere ?

Best flight sim ever? Im quite torn on the issue, its eather Commanche 3 or Hardwar but I can't decide,Comanche 3 is flying fast and low with your lock on warning bleeping like crazzy and your gattling gun tairing into the enemy, pulling of dangerous turns around hills and trees. Hardwar is the game you play 12clock on a sunday at lan parts when your compleatly bored of FPS, your flying around in a sooped up deaths head with 20 pirates on your tail, dodging in and out of the structures in high rise to try and shake em, your screaming at your friend to come and help you out.

that doesnt sound good but when he arrives he turns on his after burner and uses his ship as a missile to ram the pirates into buildings and generaly slow them down while you rain down with your ion cannon and missiles <!--emo&:)--><img src="http://www.natural-selection.org/iB_html/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif" border="0" valign="absmiddle" alt=':)'><!--endemo--> awsome.
Its an absolute classic.
As for noone making space sims anymore, I think frontier is still developing Elite 4 - but there is s little news and they seem to be more happy posting elite to the gameboy advanced, so maybe its just vapourware
