<b>What is GorgeCraft?</b>
GorgeCraft is a mod designed for 1-4 (8 if working in pairs) players to build and construct to their hearts content. The aim is to give as much freedom as possible to the players for building, letting their imaginations do the rest.
It takes the Alien builder class from the game Natural Selection 2, and gives it a whole new lease of life, freed from the ravages of battling pesky Marines.
It's a little known fact that the kharaa aliens are completely different races, absorbed by the bacterium in it's quest to grow. Back on their peace-loving homeworld, Gorges love to spend all their time building, playing sports and sliding around on their bellies. It is their calling. GorgeCraft gives you an opportunity to experience Gorges operating in their natural habitat.

GorgeCraft 1.5 Release Notes:
Gameplay:
Doubled Gorge Jump Height Increased Gorge Base and Belly Sliding Speeds Added prop 'refinery_crate_02' as building Object 'Crate' to build menu 3 Added prop 'generic_crate_01' as building object 'Box' to complete build menu 3 Massively increased Gorge Build range Massively increasd Gorge Healspray range, radius and cone Removed 'buy' menu Spit/Spray is set to weapon 5, although heal spray is always available on right click and will cancel build menu's Build Menu's on weapons 1-3. Current Build menu listings (will update with more intuitive groupings over time)
Removed a lot of unneccesary NS2 Code - e.g. TechData.lua 107KB > 61KB (More to go though!!) Removed Team 1 Removed Onos Reduced server code on some current objects Removed some unnecessary pre-cache effects Mod is customised to GCGamerules, no longer works with default ns2_ maps.
Overall, between first completing my map on Thursday, and final mod testing on Saturday, my beginning fps in the pit went from 68fps to 91fps. Hives still need optimisation, as they cause a large dip in fps when there are too many!!!
Known Issues: Hydra's do not build automatically, even on infestation. A crag can get a hydra to 100% but it will not build until hit with a healspray. Crates and boxes physics objects are not accurate, also they are not stackable, they are supposed to be buildable like the clog, so further investigation required!! Console spamming "Error: Snapshot Overflow Too many entities" when you have too many entities :P Gorge can only eat Hydra, Clog, Crate and Box after building, but all buildings immediately after placement. Cysts seem to be limited to about 40.
Mapping:
DO NOT OPEN THIS MAP IN THE EDITOR UNLESS YOU HAVE CREATED A 'GAME' MOD IN LAUNCHPAD THAT IS POINTING TO A COPY OF THE MOD FILES, IS RUNNING THE MOD, AND YOU OPEN THE EDITOR FROM LAUNCHPAD!!
This has to be stressed purely because opening the map to have a look without doing this, will cause the gc_gamerules entity to disappear. Any save will mean the map will just cause your game to crash when you launch the mod.
Creating a map for GorgeCraft is very easy. All you need is a TechPoint entity set to Team 2, and a GCGamerules entity, plus space for the players to build. Please use the GCgamerules entity, there is also a GCFGamerules entity in the editor, but this will currently do nothing. Customised versions of NS2 maps can be very easily made, by opening in you GorgeCraft Mod editor and adding a GCGamerules. Be aware the ns2 maps are very big and can get very overloaded with entities.
A little bit more:
There are big plans afoot!!
I have a B.U.S!! A Big Unannounced Surprise!!
This surprise will see the mod turn to v2. It's going to be a big jump!
I have an I.T.P!!! Is this possible??
I am also putting in place a sustainable (hopefully) versioning system, as I expect game feature updates to begin to take longer to implement, as I move onto bigger ideas.
Using the same 1.1.1 system as now, first number will be major game features/systems full release, 2nd number will be feature releases in increments up to complete feature release, and the third number will be for releases caused by NS2 updates, and minor feature changes/fixes. This means you may see versions like 1.12.17 if things go badly wrong for me, hahaha!!
I am also dropping the alpha bit on the releases, as this mod is in version 1.5, I realised there is no alpha, beta, release for a mod, it's a version from the moment it's created.
Anyway, enjoy it, and if you are, let me know!!! Send me your screenshots/videos whatever. The best/funniest will be posted/linked on our site and maybe even uploaded to ModDB!!
Bugs, comments, ideas and suggestions in the usual places!!!
If you find a fix for any bugs or have some code to improve my current implementations, please get in touch, I'd love any help I can get making this bigger and better!!

My vote for your BUS is to add <b>Gorge Towerdefence</b> mode! Have hordes of brainless marines (bots) run into your beautifully built fortresses and see how long you can hold them off, with an X limit of resources. ;)

Now you mention it, I suppose it is kind of Gorge Tower Defence.. ON STEROIDS, hahaha :) It won't stay unannounced for long, I am terrible at keeping surprises a secret....

Hmmm, anyone have any help on model physics?
I am unable to see where the hive picks up it's physics box information. I have created a new hive object called GorgeHive, which is a standard structure, rather than a command structure. When I place the model in game (I use the normal hive model), it has no physics, I can walk through the model. There is no CreatePhysics function that I can find related to the hive, so where does it get the physics model for? And why is it not being used when I place a gorgehive?
EDIT - It seems to be the difference between a scriptactor and an actor. Any further clarification on the difference? If I run my GorgeHive as a script actor, I should be able to set the animations and constructions etc?

GorgeCraft Version 1.5.1 released.
No new features, but game updated to incorporate the millions of changes by UWE in build 217 of NS2. Have fun, and Enjoy your art. Dedicated server uses 430mb when empty, a very low performance hit, should be able to run on most servers out there without heavy overclocking.
GorgeCraft v2 is coming soon, with some amazing new features!!

So it turns out, the Crash was caused by the Insight spamming death messages error, which I had resolved, by removing the messages from the player, but obviously not the source of the error. Expect an update to GorgeCraft before the weekend is out :)
Interestingly, code I developed for GorgeCraft v2, has been used in the new version of proving grounds, and made more efficient. Hopefully, this will transfer nicely back into V2 of GorgeCraft, and make the release of that happen sooner :)

Updated for NS2 BetaBuild 219. Updated Icons for 1st build menu. Boxes and Crates are now stackable, and buildable upon. Optimized Hive Performance by removing Egg Generation. On Death, players now auto-respawn. (Note, nothing can kill you in this game, this is only needed if you get stuck and type kill in console.) Added New Custom Loading Screen - Thanks MotherGoose :)

Just thought I'd post a quick video to show of the the new loading screens and spinners created for the GorgeCraft mod. This video shows one of the Loading Screens. There are more and they are still undergoing minor revisions.
A big thanks to MotherGoose for the loading screens, and for a Custom Font he has created, which is not in the video version unfortunately.
I would also like to thank myself for the customised loading spinner, I feel I did a great job there :)

For those of you playing GorgeCraft. It still works in build 220. Console does get spammed with errors regarding the GetIsRookie() function, which has been newly added by UWE in this build, but the mod still works and plays fine. I will release a small update very shortly.

I can never do a simple update....
I've ripped even more NS2 code out, and have almost finished putting polish in place for the full v1.0 release of NS2. I am having a few problems with the main menu though, like why is my logo image being turned into italics....
Soul_RiderMod BeanJoin Date: 2004-06-19Member: 29388Members, Constellation, Squad Five Blue
Lol, well the update continues....
I have just finished creating a 2nd map for the mod, gc_flatland. It's essentially a box room, but it has textures and lights :) I have created a bug for myself from ripping out all the extra code, so that is going to take longer to fix than initially anticipated....
I was going to spend all-day today modding Proving Grounds, Instead I spent all day today modding GorgeCraft, oh well, best laid plans and all that.....
Soul_RiderMod BeanJoin Date: 2004-06-19Member: 29388Members, Constellation, Squad Five Blue
Introducing gc_flatland:
A very short demo video of our very basic new map. This is the 2nd map for GorgeCraft. One of the comments we got about gc_pits was more flat space for building was needed. We listened and now present gc_flatland!
You can also see a couple of loading screens and the new custom font for GorgeCraft, thanks again MotherGoose!!
Secondly, I have fixed the GhostModel bug, and am preparing to launch GorgeCraft on the Steam Workshop. The mod is almost ready for release v1.0 of NS2. If anyone can work on a simple Gorge Building based cinematic for me, for the main menu, I would be extremely grateful.
I also have the in-game tweet ticker set to the ModBeans twitter account, so you will see ModBeans related tweets in-menu rather than NS2 tweets :)

Guys, I have an important announcement regarding GorgeCraft....
<b>Announcement</b> -
The ever changing codebase of NS2 means that the extreme optimisations I make for this mod, cause untold headaches each NS2 build. My limited programming skills mean I can't cope with the constant fixing that needs to be done. I have had a tough time thinking about this the last few days, as I am caught between a rock and a hard place.
If I just use default NS2, amended to play GorgeCraft, I will overload a server in no time at all. The entity counts, and server side model calculations, would bring even the most powerful server to it's knees. I have to optimise, for the game to be playable. I have reached a compromise with myself. Until NS2 has a stable code base, or until UWE releases a build for modders to run off so they don't need to adapt to UWE's ever changing mind on things, GorgeCraft will only be optimised on the Models used. I will load all NS2 assets as default, but just optimise the models used specifically in game.
This means my superbly performing GorgeCraft will be reduced to a not very superbly performing mod. The timing couldn't be worse, with this now able to go onto the Steam Workshop, but needs must. I can't change the game as radically as I do, then keep updating it every week while UWE goes crazy with code changes. As of today I will be starting GorgeCraft again, from scratch for the who knows how many'th time. Performance will be absolutely terrible in comparison with previous releases, but that's the way it goes.....

Well, I was hoping this was going to be really simple to update and get working again, but it appears there are more than a few spanners in the works due to the fact that lifeform upgrades are now tied to Alien buildings.
Well anyway, I hope to have an update out for everyone to play with fairly soon..

Some friendly modding advice:
If you get a bug that you cannot fix for two weeks, restart your code from scratch, and you get the bug again but this time you fix it after 2 days....
Make a note of the fix, because if it happens again a few days later, there is no guarantee you will remember how you fixed it!!!!!

OK, after a hard days work, I have all 13 of the Alien buildings in, working, with the menus. You'll notice above there were 15, with a box and a crate filling out the last 2 slots, however, as there are so many more alien buildings these days, I have left out those 2, while I decide how to fill up the remaining 7 slots.
I will also need to bug @Rantology to see if she can make some additional icons up for me once I have decided what will go where. Here is what I have so far:
I have also got the mod using my placeable spawns, from PG. The next steps are removing all the unused NS2 code, models and precached items, to improve the performance. Not that performance is an issue, but this is a building mod, and as such, total entity counts on the maps can go very high.
While this is designed as a single-player/co-op with friends over a listen server, I want to make sure it is as accessible as possible, which means being able to perform on the lowest equipment possible.
Following the code tidy-up, I will release the mod, so people can build and play to their hearts content. It is designed to be run on listen servers, rather than online servers, as there are no win conditions, and with people building and leaving, issues may occur with server memory usage etc, for this reason, I would advise playing on a listen server only, however, if you choose to ignore my advice, then go for it.
Once the game is out in the wild, and bug-fixed, I will get to work on the B.U.S.

Welcome to GorgeCraft.
GorgeCraft is a mod designed for players to build and construct to their hearts content. GorgeCraft gives you an opportunity to experience Gorges operating in their natural habitat...
Containing 13 of the Alien buildings, play away to your hearts content, making obscure art from the Alien buildings.
Recommended for playing on your own, or on a listen server with friends. There is no win condition, you just play until you are bored, and then close the game down.
Currently in Alpha, 7 more Alien buildings will be added, code optimisation and other updates will be coming along to further improve your building experience.
GorgeCraft is Part 1 of the GorgeWorld Trilogy.

1 - The spawn hive gives a Hive Death imminent warning for no apparent reason.
2 - Need to disable hints as they are currently just empty.

Download, enjoy and have fun!!!
A big thanks to MotherGoose for the loading screens, and for a Custom Font he has created, which is not in the video version unfortunately.
I would also like to thank myself for the customised loading spinner, I feel I did a great job there :)

I've ripped even more NS2 code out, and have almost finished putting polish in place for the full v1.0 release of NS2. I am having a few problems with the main menu though, like why is my logo image being turned into italics....

Well anyway, I hope to have an update out for everyone to play with fairly soon..
DON'T WORRY LITTLE HIVE, I WILL PROTECT YOU...
If you get a bug that you cannot fix for two weeks, restart your code from scratch, and you get the bug again but this time you fix it after 2 days....
Make a note of the fix, because if it happens again a few days later, there is no guarantee you will remember how you fixed it!!!!!
I am thinking of making it a feature.... Also note, when I check the console, no errors, maybe it's meant to be.... :P
EDIT - Not sure where the sound delay comes from though :P I think that may be a video issue rather than game...
Oh and part 2 of the GorgeWorld Trilogy as well.
GorgeCraft is a mod designed for players to build and construct to their hearts content. The aim is to give as much freedom as possible to the players for building, letting their imaginations do the rest. It takes the Alien builder class from the game Natural Selection 2, and gives it a whole new lease of life, freed from the ravages of battling pesky Marines.
