And I must say it's becoming more and more attractive to me, as there is finally some real discussion with conflicting opinions and broad spectrum of different experiences.

I can't stand these "iron fist" attitudes. They smell of arrogance, an unwarranted feeling of superiority and a blatant disregard of the Free Speech spirit. Even if Free Speech is not a human right here, it's still a damn good idea for every community of human beings.

Free speach has its limitations everywhere, as does free press and all other freedoms. You are not allowed to say anything you want to anyone in real life, there are laws to prevent it in all countries.

I think you miss the point a bit. It's not what you say, it is how you say it.

A whole lot of people take the lack of reprecussions (ie: freedom) on the net as an incentive to act in ways they would not otherwise dare. This has some good effects (such as people getting a creative outlet) and some bad ones (such as people calling eachother names and being generally nasty, just because they can get away with it).

I like diversity, no, actually I love diversity, but I don't think:

    Lamer1: "Marines r to pwrefull"

    Lamer2: "stfu n00b"

Is a very intelligent display of varying opinions, or makes anyone happy really.

It is true that Free Speech does not and should not include the right to spam or insult people. These are the two things responsible moderators must prevent.

However, whether willingly or not, the "iron fist" approach takes the limitations further, step by step. There are moderators that will take action against "overly sarcastic comments" or an "argumentative attitude".

The problem is that the "iron fist" supporters hate (or fear) any form of conflict and are always eager to prevent any form of disagreement. They are wary even of civil forms of disagreement, because they fear it might escalate. Such an attitude will never lead to any kind of fruitful discussion.

I think they should make "retard" an obscenity, since no one uses it constructively.

They should un-obscenity p!ssed, since it's useful and in G-rated movies, for god's sake!

    Must... RESIST.....

<flame, sorry>"Free Speech" (I just had to note those oh-so-important caps)

The Internet does NOT BELONG TO THE USA! </flame>

Right, now I'm composed. The Iron fist thing does exist, but I've seen very little of it (thankfully) on these boards. Unfortunately, a post for a call to sanity was never going to be that successful, as most people (due to what has already been described as happens online) have the first reaction of how to disobey that call *Sigh*

Possibly we could have a cross section of posters, not modded or anything, but simply tagged on their post count to show those who will attempt to calm down the mass flamers or whatever. So, no special abilities, just the fact the tag will give them the ability to warn others that if they continue, a mod will be asked to view the thread in question and make some judgement, for better or worse (thus also policing this "notquitemods" as if the call is up to the mod, an abuse of this priveledge will have their status revoked)

But then again, maybe that would mean MORE work for the mods... (who are dev's anyway, and have better things to do, like fix the game more )
