Growing Amor

not only eyecandy! thx to the new material system!
due the new material system i remembered a statement of Charlie in an old video.

he said something like: the armor on the body will differ

so i ask myself, is growing armor coming?
it just came to me, when i read the railgun thread,
that a onos without any armor left, could get 3 shot by shotgun(ers).

i was thinking of a standard procedure, that lmgs are only shooting at the onos
as long at it has armor left, but how should i know as a marine player,
when to focus the rest of the pack?

then i realized that such an effect, like splattering armor and also growing
armor trough healing would be easy to achieve with the new materialsystem.

Am I wrong?

ps.: it also would be cool on rines
and special eyecandy would be, if it would be crossed with hitdetection
and only the parts splitter where you are hitting your opponent (make it a cvar ;) )

(but yea, it should be doable in some visually recognizable sense, i've always thought "scales")

The health+armor indicator/percentage on the commander interface fills that role right now to tell you how much damage you've done to the beast. Marines have to be looking directly at it I think...

It would however be awesome to see the material system used like this if it does not decrease performance a lot. Onos without armor shielding would look weird though. Maybe just add bullet holes to it to give an indication about how much damage it has taken

I think this is a pretty damn awesome idea esspecially for the onos that would be pretty terrorfying to watch the skull bone armour grow back for the "holy f were screwed" effect when u are reloading. (only growing back in gorge heal spray/ umbra...or whatever it is now lol :P ) Having the opposite effect of bone or armour flying off with bullet hits could be interesting as it chips away (again the bone skull of onos is my example) :)

Although its very dependent on how long would take to impliment/how hard it is to do lol

shouldn't hit the performance at all, since it is done by the gpu, which is very bored atm.

or do you have noticed some hard drops when the nanoshield effect on the marine where introduced,
or when dead players dematerialize, or when building a building or welding it... see? it should already work without any problems.

yes, the growing back was my thought too, just forgot to post it, to see how fast a gorge can really HEAL an onos :)

would be just so great i think :)

but what i really wanna know from you charlie: did you mean it that way when you where talking about it? whats the deal? :)

greetings from austria to all of you over the great sea :)!!

It affected my FPS small amount like 2 or 4 less in areas with loads of stuff like bilebomb or nanoshield.

hui... but hey, that is somewhat okay for a first implementation
of complete new material system... should be a Cvar anyways...

i suggested this a long time ago.. kinda was hoping it'd happen in ns2... i think they should just gain more plating if they get carapace though.

This would need a re design of the alien models. You would have to delete the armor plating from the existing models, make them more fleshy and than add the armor plating to a material-model which can be overlay-ed on the normal one.

This isn't really that simple. But would bring some badass eye candy.
But if it is to complicated, blood effects and bullet holes for wounded aliens should be really easy with the material system.
