I guess the addition of a sniper mechanic makes sense, opens another fighting style for marines and still fits with the "ranged vs melee" stuff, so I certainly see why it would be added in...
I just hate fighting against snipers in any game (didn't like them on the lerk either), nor do I like snipers on my team (since they just camp the base the majority of the time). I don't find them remotely fun to play against and they very often destroy whatever semblance of teamwork there was because they're too busy sitting alone, waiting for their next K:D bump instead of pushing forward and actually helping their team. That's not to say ALL do that, but I think everyone would agree that the majority do (especially in pubs... which ARE the majority!).
But whatever. Not my game, not my decision, and probably(?) not a game killer. Clearly there is enough dev support for it already (and there are enough outspoken sniper players from CoD/CS/TF2/etc. here now) so I guess those of us that despise the mechanic are SOL. *shrug* Whaddyagonnado. Here's to hoping headshots aren't next. No desire whatsoever for that kind of play in NS, regardless of how logical it may seem, and that would indeed be a showstopper for me at least.
I do not support adding in a snipe rifle weapon. The pistol in NS1 was the equivalent of it for picking off far away lifeforms (mainly lerks that were shooting spores).
If you add in a sniper rifle then you need to give aliens something similar or make sure map design doesn't all have long narrow corridors with no vent shafts etc.
Tweaking the current pistol dmg is a good solution. I do not support having a zoom though. No other weapons have a zoom so lets not break the status quo in that regard otherwise lets put in ironsights for the rest of the weapons for improved accuracy while aiming and more spread while hipfiring.
If anything marines should be able to choose the type of bullet they want for their weapon. Armour piercing or standard issue.
I understand some guys are against it and you have your reasons, but don't use your CoD experience to know if a sniper could be a good idea or not. If snipers are available in NS2, they're going to fight against: -A small enemy that can hide, climb walls and move really fast. -A enemy that fly fast and can block view. -Another one who teleport in your face in 2 seconds. -A big one who can probably live through the whole clip of the sniper.
I don't know of any other games where snipers have to fight through this.
Marines are supposed to be the "ranged" team, but the only upgrade they get to fight better at long-range are GL.
I donno I am starting to think now that a sniper rifle could be a bad idea after all. In fact I can totally see players just sitting in spawn when you are trying to do a beacon rush or something and causing you to fail.
The pistol in ns1 was lethal accurate and fast and so is the case in ns2. Maybe a little tweaking could be done or something to make it a little more powerful and have a zoom feature when laser is activated. :)
