make them blue/turquois
Hello everyone,
I'm not sure if this has been discussed already, so I'll just make a thread about it. I like the implementation of lasers on turrets and pistols, but I think they shouldn't be red, but <strike>blue/</strike>turquois instead, as this is the color of the marine team. Those red lasers look a little out of place for me. I think just like the color of that glow above the IPs when there's someone spawning would be perfect.
What do you think?
Edit: pretty much like this (found the pictures online):

Compare these to Media -> Marines on the game's homepage: There is one color to indicate a marine structure is actually online and working. It's not red.

But that's just a taste and tastes are different.

Of course it's a matter of taste, but I believe from an aesthetical perspective it makes sense to use a color that is already very present in many details of the game: The IPs, the texts for teamselection in the RR, the HUD, the holographic overlay on the marines' face and the lights on the helmet and chest, the effect when buildings get dropped, etc. Plus it is a great opportunity to give the game even more of a unique style and boosts its recognition value. That's why I favor turquois.
It contrasts well with the majority of colours used on environments in NS2 (whereas blue does not - imagine trying to see a blue laser sweeping over the glowing rocks in "Cavern" on mineshaft, or over any powered-up computers on summit).
I think red is a good colour for them.
But anything from light blue to blue-green would be fine.
Most people don't realize that you can get blue laser pointers.
Modern military shows a prominant use of green lasers over red lasers for visibility. And in a few decades I'm pretty sure Blue will be prominant over green.
and then after another few decades they might move on to violet over blue.
But yeah back to blue.
Blue lasers seem futuristic.
Pretty sure NS2 takes place in the future.
It also gets bonus points for matching TSA theme
Another thing people don't realize
It's not a matter of color.
It's a matter of the brightness.
in order from dimmest to brightest
red (dim), green(Bright), blue (Super bright), violet (Ridiculous)
I think it should be turquoise blue just like all the marine tech and everything. Like the holographic overlay on the helmet of that female marine you can see on top of this page.
Edit: There are some nice screenshots in the Screenshot Gallery Thread (they are Pedro's) that show what I mean by that turqouise overlay on the helmets. That's exactly the color.

+1
Blue is everywhere, the lasers need to be visible.
Turquoise will not make the lasers less visible! Phase Gates are not so hard to spot too, even though they are not red, but turquoise actually.

Red is a color at the end of the visible spectrum, which also means it's actually harder to see. As Kouji said, green is really the most "logic" color to go with, but for some people's association of lasers, green just isn't on the list of colors to choose from. The reason for this is from brain functionality of processing colors by importance. When you see green what comes to your mind, and when you see red? The differences there are huge, but if a color doesn't grab your attention by triggering such things naturally in your head, then your brain just passes it over as "whatever".
I like green, personally, but you're still right that red might just have to be the color.
Edit:
I also just realized, that VALVe have done something similar in HL2 with the turrets in the Overwatch Nexus. (after 20 secs)
Not exactly the same, they still differ a lot from what the lasers would look like in NS2, but you see there that scanning lasers don't always have to be red.
How about it being blue/green when idle and flash red when you fire.
You can just mod it client side if you are that adamant about colors

Just to give you guys an idea. I got fed up of making individual ones.. if you want to see all colors please visit the rainbow one.
take the middle between the green and blue. THAT color.
and his images are better anyway.
WHITE LASER GO
BUT
The laser beam on the pistol is very frustrating at the moment - you still is supposed to aim through the sight on the screen, and the beam is actually only for estethic purposes.
I thought, in the beginning, that it would be implemented like in any other game (BF3), for instance, where you can actually aim through the laser beam, and it really helps, when here aiming with the laser will only bring frustration and death.
Please, make it like in all other games. That would be really cool. At the moment I prefer not to use laser.
I don't want it blue, but turquoise. I agree that blue like in the pictures by SabaHell (thank you for those, SabaHell) would blend too much in the rooms.
Do you think, that the CC's turquoise login-screen blends too much into the environment or Phase Gates or any other Marine structure? I think that turquoise is quite an attention getter and that's probably why the devs introduced it in the first place.
Even though I doubt, that turquoise would lower visibility it would be interesting to know if, by the devs, the lasers have ever been meant to warn aliens. Because honestly, I think, they are probably more for the effect than for gameplay purposes

+1 Marines have too much blue already.
