NS question

I havnt read anything about the "background" story of Ns.
I have a few questions about the "marines".

1. How do they get from planet to planet?
2. Do they ever build on planets that DOESNT look like a big rock?
3. Are they using any transport vehicles? Such as APC or dropships?
4. When was the first time they encountered Kharaas?

    Its the NS2 scifi trope used to fill any plot holes, inconsistencies, or otherwise nonsensical parts of the game.
