This Sunday Much Different will attempt to break world records by hosting a 1000 player FPS battle. You can help. The game is called Man vs. Machine, a free, browser-based shooter built in the Unity engine. If you’re camped on the Man vs. Machine front page when the record attempt starts, you stand a chance of being one of those soldiers.

It all kicks off this Sunday, January 29 at 4pm CET / 3PM GMT/ 7am PST. Don’t expect Planetside levels of complexity from this one. It’s a straightforward shooter backed up by some fancy server architecture which should hopefully allow two teams of 500 players to fight each other to the death. The event’s being run by Much Different, who are doing it “because we could.”

The teams are split between gamers and developers. Gamers will become Man, described as being “strong, handsome and red” with splash damage rocket launchers. Developers will be Machines, who are “cold, big and blue” and wield precision lasers. Slots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis but you can buy a ticket to guarantee yourself a spot. Find out more on the Man vs. Machine site.

Makes me wonder why fps player limits haven't increased much. Do any FPS support more than 64 players?

    MAG
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAG_(video_game)

Cause Map designers would be forced to make bigger visually appealing maps.
The more players and the bigger the map the more problematic to make sure that every player gets a piece of the action and the harder to control/predict game flow for the designer.
Also a single cheater can easily ruin a game no matter how many players. So bigger games have a higher chance of having at least 1 cheater in every game ;O

Any special reason this only applies to FPS:es and not MMO's? Size and probability of cheating would be equally great in my eyes.

This also made me think of why o why BF3 cut wake island map in half for 64 players and crammed the carrier inside the island instead of outside. There were no extra details to consider, most of the map is just water.

holy crap this was insane..and so smooth, no lag at all D: and lasers... LASERS EVERYWHERE. this whole thing should have been warhammer 40k themed XD.

in the end humans got raped when the developers added more health to the machine side and then they began to flank us on the left, is was a precision laser crossfire slicing us into minced meat. you could not use your weapons inside the massive spawn tank vehicle, but the aliens could fire into them, resulting in one massive spawnrape of 300 deaths per second... it was horribly balanced.. humans had slow ass rocket launchers, aliens had rapid fire precision laser sniperrifles or something. it was like shooting the infamous fish in the barell. but so much fun

someone uploaded a gameplay vid from the human side
