After so many years of bias toward team 2/Kharaa, I can say that even with all the experience I've had that judging the distance for a bite to register is quite possibly THE MOST ANNOYING THING in NS1 and NS2.
When playing the HL-mod NS1 I began modding for better effect, and discovered the ALIEN CROSSHAIRS. They were brilliant and brought my accuracy up by some 10's of percent (IMO). Therefore my suggestion is as follows;
Include Alien crosshairs giving a pinpoint position of where the teeth will close.
Add an indicator to the crosshair that will turn (red) when in range for a bite.

REMOVE RIFLE BUTT DAMAGE FFS!

I totally agree with myself on the riflebutt thing, too.
It's totally *Happy Panda* and if it were to continue to be a 'DAMAGE' attack it should be reduced to like 5hp MAXIMUM.
