Dead Kim Jong-Il
I remember some people here are interested in North Korea, and even for those who aren't it's still a relatively big event, so here it is; Kim Jong-Il is dead and one of his sons is likely to inherit the cult.
It'll be interesting to see how well it transfers over to a third person considering Kim Jong-Il's cult was more an extension of his fathers; he never really managed to build up his own one. Also three portraits hanging in every room will start to get annoying.

On how the power will transfer over, I reckon it'll be easier than we think. I mean we're talking about nation of people with a messed up group mentality, not people who practice independent rational thinking in any degree. Propaganda is power and i think a halfwit puppet would be the ideal candidate for the men behind the curtain whatever their true motives are.
I'd guess little strategic value or resources to take over, but I'm not expert in these matters.
...Kim?
These news may or may not be a big deal.
also since the discovery of the thread I alerted mein Faja (he was shocked) and have since managed to misplace my mobile -__-
Yep, China wouldn't have a problem with an large American military presences right on its border.

Kim Jong-un may act out a bit international to prove his power in the country but more likely he will be forced to spend the next few years working on domestic issues and consolidating power, he was only named as the heir apparent a few years ago so he has not had much time to build strong relations with the NK military and elite. This will hopefully mean little aggression coming from NK at least for a while. On the other hand if Jong-un is deranged and the military willing enough to follow he might do something suicidal and stupid.
Side note, today is South Korean President Lee Myung-bak's birthday.

2012 may still happen, albeit disaster through human means.

They surely had Chinese support in the Korean War, which subsequently has never actually ceased.
But NK isn't a stable society. It's bound to break down sooner or later, it's just a matter of when. And what happens then. I'd be particularly interested in SK's take on this - imagine you're the SK government. If NK's government broke down and the new government was for peaceful reunification (think Germany in 1989-90), would you want to?
West Germany was larger than East Germany (acting as a "buffer" that softened the blow of uniting two such economically disparate countries), and it's probably fair to say that the difference between East Germany and West Germany was less pronounced than the difference between North Korea and South Korea is today.
And yet, the effects of the german reunification are felt to this day, two decades hence. A united Korea would probably feel the effects for far longer than that, especially in today's rather subdued economical climate. So what would SK do?
EDIT:
Sorry he's the youngest of 3, least respected and educated as a computer expert in North Korean technologies apparently.
I tell this story every time Kim Jong-Il or North Korea come up because it never ceases to be funny to me.

and yeah, N Korea the people bond to each other, they don't have computers or tech they have each other and glorious leader
I wonder how they will react to grandson of the cult of personality, cause Il's claim to fame was his daddy was awesome
Not sure if this tidbit is true but I read that Il only made one very short public address the whole time he was Supreme Leader. As long as Un has the support of the country's elite he just has to pose for a few pictures and the public will accept him.
Found a list of the official titles Il gave himself
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Kim_Jong-il%27s_titles
how would you feel if you punched your ticket your entire life and bratty youngest stupid son of FEARLESS LEADER gets to take over
how long before you and the other generals plan a coup?
But if the general population is as brainwashed as they act in front of the cameras it would be difficult for anyone other then Un to take control of the country without a major upset, but then again maybe the population is so pacified they wouldn't do anything.
There are just so many unknowns when it comes to NK.
Edit: Un is also the youngest of three brothers so he is probably the least bratty of the bunch.
Noone is safe!
