The Best Bits of 2011

So, what are your favourite albums, games, books, films and whatever else you've come across during the year? Anything memorable published or happened in 2011 goes. I've never been too good at keeping up with the new stuff, but I'll try to post something.

------------

Favourite Album: PJ Harvey - Let England Shake.

The first PJ Harvey album I bought. In some sense it's a protest album about war, but it's way more diverse and ends up going through Harvey's love and frustration towards England and its war ridden history also. In general the album has kind of wonderful timeless feel in it. The lyrics are also way more thought out than in most albums.

There's a series of short films build around songs avaible on youtube. I don't think I can pick any particular favourite on the album, so I'll give one of the catchier ones as an example.

Favourite gaming moment: Star Craft: Brood War: Jin Air OSL

Possibly one of the last big BW tournaments ever delivered big time. Lots of excellent series, great comeback storylines, nailbiter finals and all that. As good as anything e-sportish can get. Watching the finals on a livestream was quite memorable.

If you're comfortable with the BW spectating already, it might be worth checking out the Korean broadcast as it transmits the excitement better. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cgVRjxvRdVc

---

As for movies, I don't think I saw any particular stand outs. I think Captain America exceeded my low expectations, but that's roughly it.

Out of games Magicka sticks out quite nicely despite all the technical awkwardness. I'm still looking forward to try Bastion and Super Meat Boy at least. Limbo also seemed interesting. Bigger titles like Skyrim and possibly BF3 are on to-do list once I get some heavier hardware. Any other recommendations on the games section?

Don't listen to specific albums much, not too comfortable about revealing my reading habits, so I'll just talk about games.

Though it was one of the first releases in the year, Ghost Trick remains my favourite game of 2011, with DX:HR close behind. It was a bit too easy a game, without many "aha" moments good puzzle games have, but story, music and characters were all so incredible and memorable it didn't matter.
DX:HR outdid it in some things, like highlighting discussions relevant for our time or however you'd say it, but had its own host of minor problems that knocked it off the top perch.

I'm sure there were other contenders but none really came close to the feelings and thoughts from those two games.

Except now you pretty much have to. Do go on. I'm very curious!

    Well it's... these books, y'know?

    Don't laugh, I think they're really well-written and original...

I was thinking of the latest two which technically aren't out yet, had some long build-up to large amounts of "oh ######" moments.

Yeah haha I soundly belittle your literary tastes etc.

Now I wish you hadn't told us. It was far more fun to let the imagination run wild. :(

Agreed. Though Boardwalk Empire has made me sick to my stomach lately, I guess that qualifies it as a powerful series at least.

Just recently disovered community, which I think is just plain magnificent. The cast and the stories are just spot on everytime.

Book wise... wise mens fear tops the charts.

Music... mhh, I dunno... listened to a lot of stuff, not sure if any of that is from 2011 tho. If we're talking genres I loved this year it's electro swing - caravan palace.

    Best internet show?
