If your Origin ID is your real name, change it if possible for the love of all things holy, or bend over for spambot (to kick you up the arse, natch).

This is the first I have heard of a "friend code" is there any reason to not just post your username?

...after all, the only reason they left Steam was because they wanted control over the microtransactions, and your full identity for internal marketing purposes and to sell it on to third parties for even MORE money. You're paying to be spammed.
Besides, from what I've heard from friends who were playing in the closed-final beta, BF3 is a HUGE disappointment compared to BF2. Completely moronicized down for the console kiddies. Er, 'for enhanced accessibility' that is. As a former heli pilot specialist, this makes me a very sad panda.

Er, 'for enhanced accessibility' that is. It's what you do when you go to work every day. It's how you make ends meet. If your company didn't look to stay competitive, sooner or later you'd be out of a job and you wouldn't be crying about your boss being greedy, you'd be crying about how he's incompetent.

My understanding is that Valve have been making a move in certain territories to drive prices down to stay competitive with online retailers such as Amazon. For example in the UK today I can pre-order Skyrim on PC for £34.99 on Steam, but on Amazon UK it's £27.87. These prices get slashed towards release as anticipation mounts, the idea being that places like Amazon and supermarkets sells pretty much everything, so taking a hit on a game item is fine if that person goes on to buy an extra £50 on additional goods with more favourable margins. (Anyone noticed the rise in big releases that are strangely missing from the Steam store in the UK? Ask yourself why that may be.) There's nothing wrong with Valve wanting to stay competitive, but the problem is they still want a hefty cut. Another problem is that publishers deal not only with Valve, but with stores that sell boxed copies; huge corporations like Wallmart. For some publishers, that may have licenses on other IPs that sell not only games, but action figures and all the other types of merchandising you may associate with a brand, it's a difficult conversation to have with Wallmart when you are offering a better deal to would-be customers with a direct competitor.

It's all politics, whatever. The main point is that Valve are pushing down prices and are being more aggressive with their cut. So what does a sensible publisher do? They make their own version of Steam, where they can make decent margins on the stuff they produce. After all, they have plenty of games they make so it makes total sense. If you were a producer of a product and you could sell direct to the customer, cutting out the middleman, wouldn't you do just that? Would you be greedy or just sane?

The main motivation for people hating on Origin right now is twofold:
- An initially dodgy EULA, which is now more sound (but still sounds like they're gonna grab data from you so they can, possibly, serve ads, just like Google does unless you opt out).
- People are resistant to change, especially if they don't understand the reasons for said change.

It's not greed, it's necessity. Valve are the ones playing hardball here. People need to stop acting like Valve are complete Saints. They're not criminals either, or greedy, but like EA they are looking after themselves. Valve are just as much a Goliath as EA these days. This isn't a story from the Bible, so stop living in that fantasy world of yours.

P.S. Battlefield is the best PC multiplayer I've played in a long time, certainly the best shooter. Take it from someone who has actually played the game. It may come as a surprise to Talesin but his friends are playing a beta that no longer exists. The game is out and people are loving it.

There is a third reason people don't like Origin, which is that it's pretty ######. Yes, I've used it, I'm talking from experience here.

Valve have confirmed EA get more funds from it. This was always going to be obvious and for any company they want as much revenue as possible. I'd call them becoming business smart not being a greed machine, not if you know how so far in 2011 they've failed to make any profit as a whole company.

All that being said it's a pain in the arse for me as I like my steam library to have all the games I have in one area.

And yes, BF3 is dumbed down ######.

It's not very obvious to me how BF3 is dumbed down compared to BF2. Is it because air is having a much harder time to rape infantry due to hand held AA? Removal of bombs from jets? (Personally hated that and it was always a friendly fire fest whenever a jet spawned). Do tell.

EDIT: Oh right, I forgot about merging classes and regenerating health for EVERYTHING.

What pisses me off so far is how I can lie down with a mounted bipod behind cover, shooting at an enemy 150m away for 3 seconds with careful bursts and single shots while compensating for distance and he can just twirl around, twitch left and right while standing up and spray at my general direction and have me killed. This happens often enough to rule out stupid luck headshots.

Yeah. That's the way of the console games at the moment. You got shot 5 times? Ok. Stand still for 5 seconds, you can be shot another 5.

It's like they want kids to play CS in real life.

It takes a while for the health regen to kick in, regens slowly without a medic around and you don't regen any health if you're supressed or playing hardcore. Oh man, those friggin console kiddies huh? dumbing down gaming. The merged classes are straight from BF2142. I guess that's dumbed down console trash as well?

BF2142's class system is better than BF2 IMO.

It allows more customization which is good. Also no one really played classes like Assault in BF2 unless they were playing the class for this thing called "fun" (everyone knows it's all about stat padding which is why you should always go medic and/or support to rake up the points).

As for BF3 - Regen and no commander mode? I am disappointed :(.
