Weapon Icons

In the progress log I'm seeing that weapon icons are coming. Personally I don't think icons are needed, and can be replaced by border highlighting the weapon in a unique color. This will give players all the info they need, while minimizing the visual footprint the functionality is going to add to the game.

Thinking command hud blue for the basic lmg, green for the shotgun, red for the flamethrower and purple for the grenade launcher.

As for the ammo/health packs, a simple white outline would be fine I think.

I like the idea of outlines rather than icons. Personally I hate having the screen cluttered.

On a side-note though; I don't think outlines or icons are needed nor necessary.

I do think weapons need to be more apparent on the ground. Also, icons are coming regardless, it's on the progress page as "started". Hoping my idea is seriously considered.

Maybe something like in Borderlands would be nice on weapons you can pickup, maybe color coded to show the weapon type.
Not saying like this, should fit the universe better but just as a general idea)

Only the beam/glow btw, not the popup window

I'm hoping the weapon icons being implemented are only shown when you put your crosshair over the weapon itself.

Err, or maybe a 'small' arrow pointing down towards the weapon with some sort of recognition.

Yes, I'm thinking the same, if icons HAVE to be in the game.

I'm thinking based on your distance, you have to aim at the weapon for some time period for the icon to show. The further the distance, the greater the time period (up to say a second) you have to look at it. This is to prevent the icon from popping up in the middle of combat if you coincidentally/accidentally look at it. Or while looking at a weapon you can just press the use key or something. Also disable weapon icon popups within 1 second of firing a weapon, this also will prevent screen spammage if you are in a fight.

As for the icon, I'd like to see the current ammo in the primary clip(s), and reserve ammunition. I'd also like to see who was using it last, or who bought it or something.

Back to the coloring, if they make the colors look in the same "shade" I guess as the marine HUD blue, that would be awesome. As visually comfortable and true to the game as possible, I'm not artist though, otherwise I'd put up some examples.

D2 reference; hold ALT to see items on the ground(?).

Not a bad idea at all. Alt is the default voice communication key though. But using that to popup the icon for the weapon you are looking at, or holding it to popup all weapon icons within field of vision is a great idea.
