Basically a big 'ol demo. FAQ.

QUOTE

Q. What's included in the StarCraft II Starter Edition?
A. The Starter Edition gives players access to the first three campaign missions on Mar Sara, and then gives the player the ability to choose a fourth mission -- either the first mission offered by Dr. Hanson or the first mission offered by Tychus Findlay in the campaign. Players will also get access to a pair of Challenge Missions, a selection of multiplayer maps, and a custom-game map. The multiplayer and custom game maps available may be cycled from time to time.
In addition, Starter Edition players can earn achievements within the available content; can view profile, ladder, and achievements pages; and can access many functions of the map editor.

I'm just going to start mentally substituting your posts with the phrase "AN OPINION UTTERLY CONTRARY TO EVERYONE ELSE'S". I think it's for the best.

Like you felt the need to post in this thread on a topic which, by your own admission, you wish you had nothing to do with?

I think the release of demos is important, the only reason not to release a demo is if you're trying to scam people out of money by not giving them an accurate demonstration of your product.
I am therefore agreeing with the idea that it should have come out before the game, not after the game when most of the people who bought it on recommendation because they didn't have anything else to go on have already done so.
Tried custom maps yet? There's tons and I'm sure there's lots fun maps (beats Warcraft 3 which is now plagued by hosting bots hosting the same maps over and over :( and out competing regular players).
Basically it feels horribly dated to me. Hasn't done anything interesting or different, almost every other rts in the past five years or so has tried to do new things.
But I just can't bring myself to enjoy it, I got bored of the campaign halfway through simply because while every mission had different objectives, I was still playing effectively the same game. If that campaign was in dawn of war or company of heroes or supreme commander it'd be the best game ever, but as it was, it was desperately trying to mix up a game that I just cannot find enjoyable.
It still relies on the idea of 'build a bunch of rocks, papers, and scissors and attack move them at the enemy' and comparing that to the very terrain-based combat in CoH, or the excellent intelligence war and epic scale of supreme commander, or the very fluid and tactical approach of ground control/world in conflict where it's more about how you use your units than which ones you have, drawing a clear influence from the old tactical games like commandoes where you don't get to pick your forces. There's even stuff like the total war style battles, which while being kinda RPS-ey you can do so much with tactics, total war is almost like a programmable simulator, you pick your forces and set your orders and then kinda just watch it play out a lot of the time, and yet it offers a quite unique experience, you field maybe a dozen units per side and they have terrible reaction time, but it turns the battlefield into a much more fluid thing, the game is about seeing and mastering the flow of momentum, which most other RTSs just don't capture.
Compared to those, it just falls really flat for me. I really think there are way better approaches to doing an RTS than the one that was used at the very start of the genre, doesn't even matter which other approach you use, they all have their perks over and above the RPS one.
Shame really, as it's got a lot of polish on it, would have made a truly great game if applied to something else.

Yep a rip off of Bejeweled but you can play it on Starcraft 2! Just log on battle.net - Click create a game then look for Starjewled. Once hosted you can click "open to public" to let players join or just add AI to play with AI (can set difficulty of AI too). Well there's something if you like Bejeweled :).
Though yeah I agree in terms of RTS, SC2 is basically a "typical RTS" with kind of basic stuff. I agree - The only reason I bought SC2 was because of map editor (I liked making maps in WC3) and the story (liked the SC1 story so wanted to see what happens next). If it had no map editor and no mods, I would probably have a second thought on getting SC2.
