In the small kingdom of indie games (and the even smaller one of RTS/FPS games) being ###### can easily backfire on you due to reputation among the indie community. I think with this advertisement they might attract uninformed people but the already existing community should recognize this dirty play as what it is. If I were UWE I would not react to that.
Does it look better and run faster? Will it be released earlier? Will it have unique game mechanics that will guarantee a long shelf life? Will it have continued support?
There can be more than 1 FPS/RTS in the field; it's allowed. The one that is more appealing will be played more frequently. For instance, I loved playing Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory because of its setting and colorful gameplay mechanics: who doesn't like to blow a bank vault and steal some gold? Then Enemy Territory came along with its detached and alien objectives and all the lore was gone. Who would play that when you had the context-rich environment of TF2? The more unique the game is, the better it is designed, the more people will flock to its servers.
For popularity, I'd say that the one that gets more exposure on Steam will win that battle. Some sort of TF2 hat or easter egg achievement event should seal the deal.
If this other game has squad strategies and differing early game build orders, I'll give it a look to see what else it's got. If it's just deathmatch or capture the point with a guy building turrets, I've got TF2 and Battlefield for that. One thing NS2 has over it is that the teams have different meshed playstyles. The other thing is atmosphere, and the other other thing is skulks can walk on walls, can you believe that?
I'll try to see how interactive they are with their community. I thought I saw some forum somewhere. Maybe they're talking about NS2 right now.
