    Ground control steer(ed) the shuttle to put it into its orbital corridor.

    Version .9 released. Nothing monumental, but there are "strut connectors" available to hold parts of your ship together now, so the thing doesn't pull itself to pieces as easily. Also the staging system has been improved - I used to have trouble getting my engines to fire/stages to separate at the right time on some rockets, but they fire correctly now. Also I don't know if I just got better or if they made it easier, but the very first ship I made from scratch in this version was totally stable and escaped gravity no problem.

    The new patch makes building stable ships quite a bit easier. I got one with escape velocity around 7500 mps.

    Also I really like this game as a concept and am looking forward to seeing more come out of it.

    It's surprisingly FUN to develop spacecraft and launch them. Are there any other games like this?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

    Reminds me of a flash game I played one time where you have to launch a hedgehog into space.

    MUST PLAY THIS.

    Guys make sure you get some life out of this game by trolling <a href="http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?board=14.0" target="_blank">this forum</a>. Or <a href="http://www.kerbalspacerepository.com/" target="_blank">here</a> (though these aren't always up-to-date). Just make sure you start <a href="http://kerbalspaceprogram.com/forum/index.php?topic=997.msg7977#msg7977" target="_blank">here</a> to make using the new parts seamless without overwriting anything or new version conflicts (you can also swap out command pods easily with it, since the game doesn't support different pods yet).

    Then you can make things like this:

    <img src="http://i.imgur.com/6Rz1g.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    <img src="http://i.imgur.com/tDviM.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    That does stuff like this:

    <img src="http://i.imgur.com/BiGOD.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />
    <img src="http://i.imgur.com/SRIb6.png" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    Do I use my crafts remaining fuel to return them to Kerbal, or let them die in cold dark space?

    I've seen success at escaping the planet, but has anyone tried to achieve a stable orbit yet?

    I've done it a couple times, it's not hard to achieve an orbit that won't collapse. It's pretty hard to achieve an orbit that is nicely circular though. I did an orbital burn that ended in me reentering the atmosphere and bringing my kerbals back home before after around 2 days of orbiting.

    Ok, so it turns out that despite my avatar, I am not the best at space.

    I've only had an hour or so to try this so far but I think "over-engineered" describes most of my rockets. The square-cube law is not my friend. I think I'm going to have to steal DiscoZombie's, and use that as a base. I notice you have a bunch of SAS modules, while I tend to use one, if any. Do multiple SAS modules really help that much?

    I'm kind of annoyed I can't attach fuel tanks to horizontal seperators; that's the only thing preventing me from just copying the space-shuttle / apollo design, and also that boosters stacked on top of each other don't just form a bigger booster but instead somehow all fire at the same time and melt the one beneath them.

    But tonight.... tonight my Kerbals will slip the surly bonds of earth and FLY dammit!

    Protip:

    Attach a solid booster to your strut, then put fuel tanks + rocket underneath that. So long as you make sure the solid booster is on a different fire stage you should be fine to do a space-shuttle type.

    Protip #2: SAS modules are your friend. An uncontrolled and spinning rocket is a good way to kiss the dirt.

    Someone modded in the Saturn V, it gives you a ton of power and I have been able to achieve a stable near circular orbit.

    I don't know because nobody gave a ###### about your link, or the dumb opinion you're getting all bothered about trying to defend.

    One thing that helps a lot when building rockets is to use the symmetry mode. That way you make sure you're not off balance at all. You do want to use as few SAS modules as possible, but you need enough to make sure you don't spin out.
  • Nil_IQNil_IQ Join Date: 2003-04-15 Member: 15520Members
    Symmetry mode?

    It turns out that yes, insufficient SAS was indeed the problem with my rockets up until now. Even my over-engineered "Fatboy" rocket made it into orbit with the addition of 3 extra SAS modules. I managed to make it into almost-orbit and got most of the way around the planet, eventually landing on the dark side, on a mountain where they exploded for no reason.

    Stupid mountains.

    Its a bug, you can't land on the dark side.

    49 meters! A new record! Let's try adding more boosters next time.

    ...Oh, and please inform the next-of-kin that we have some new job openings...

    I managed to reach orbit on my fifth launch. A stable elliptical orbit that never touches the atmosphere and therefore never decays. Sadly, I hadn't intended to run out of fuel by that point. Brave kermans, your frozen corpses shall be retrieved on later journeys!

    Edit: Any sentence beginning with "brave kermans" is inevitably going to end in death, isn't it?
  • elodeaelodea Editlodea Join Date: 2009-06-20 Member: 67877Members, Reinforced - Shadow
    I did tried more boosters gwar but i figured my original design was fundamentally flawed :p so back to the drawing board.
    <img src="http://i.imgur.com/242s3.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    Managed to get a near perfect circular orbit with this - constant speed, constant altitude that doesn't decay. It only just hit me you can control throttle with the liquid fuel engine so you could gently adjust speed and altitude change untill you reached a perfect circular orbit.
    <img src="http://i.imgur.com/7Jx3O.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

    This game is just so incredibly fun!

    Not to mention that with a liquid fuel engine you can turn it off completely to save fuel for a return trip! ... you do have plans for a return trip, right?

    Don't hate because my space program is so advanced I can nuke you from orbit :D

    Don't know why the rest of you are still ######ing around with the boring default parts...

    PS: Why the hell aren't you in IRC anymore?

    So I'm 14:45:30 into a flight, at 54.7Mm altitude, doing 936.7m/s. Speed hasn't changed in three hours. Have I escaped the gravitational pull of Kearth?
