First time player with a graphics question

Hi there, I've been watching NS2 for a while now, and after getting computer I think I can play it on, I've decided to jump right in and give it a shot. Recently I played my first game (well, part of it, since NS2.exe crashed halfway through), but I had an interesting inability to see my allied Marines. I could see and shoot at hostiles just fine, but whenever a fellow marine was near, all I saw was the gun he was holding sliding along the ground. I thought I was alone until one of them started using the flamethrower on some DI.
My question to you who are more experienced is thus: Is this normal? Have you heard of this before? Any idea what is causing it? I've searched through the forums and Get Satisfaction to no avail.

GTX450 actually. I've been meaning to get a 470, but my old one RMAd and went out of stock where I bought it at the same time.
You should try uninstalling NS2, changing to another country to download from in the steam settings, and install the game again - to prevent corruption when installing. And of course installing the newest graphic driver, if you didnt already

Trying that now
You would probably be better off waiting for the 600 series cards to come out in the forth quarter and buying a 570 after prices drop.
I'm slightly worried that some damage to my graphics card could be what's causing this bug though; If that's the case, I don't want to be stuck out of NS2 for 2 seasons or find myself unable to boot one day.
Plus, I may also wind up getting a 480, which I hear is basically a 580 with some nice price deductions.

For my own experience I've seen plenty of glitches but nothing like what you describe. It seems very specific for a hardware error but I guess it's possible. If I'm not mistaken some of NS2HD's videos were recorded with a 450 including some of his build 178 casts. So the card/drivers themselves should be fine.
+1. Tram is still bugged for me as well
I am literally fresh off the Steam download. There was a West wing, Marine and Alien start (obviously), and I took down a hive that was perched over a depression in the floor that glowed blue. That's about all I got before NS2.exe crashed.
I didn't even get the layout down because there was already a Portal up when I joined.
Edit:That reinstall has now allowed me to see my fellow players and play 2 rounds without a crash in sight. Combat does seem to stutter/teleport a lot even though my FPS is fine, but from what I've read, that's a server optimization issue, not a client one.
My first thought though is that is the card too hot? Maybe its graphics distortion *shrug*
Your video card is overheating. More specifically it's one or more of the ram modules on the card. Either your heatsink isn't properly seated or the card has warped from too many thermal cycles.
Build 176 had a glitch where only the Lerk model looked like that for me on my 470 system. Everything else was fine but Lerks were just huge jumbles of brown polygons. Was very annoying.
I would suggest SpeedFan from Almoco. It has a graphing function so you can see what your card was doing while you were ingame.
Yaa <3 HoN!
