ns2_serva

<div class="IPBDescription">Work in progress.</div>After sorting out the 'whole' business in my other thread i figured i would open another one so can get people's thoughts and ideas on the map.
This is the first time I've actually started developing a map for NS2 so any help would be appreciated, also please ignore the 'Summit' model it's just there until i can get a replacement.

Anyway ns2_serva, or the marine spawn.

<img src="http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/432/ns2serva1.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

<img src="http://img402.imageshack.us/img402/694/ns2serva2.jpg" border="0" class="linked-image" />

Any criticism or suggestions would go down great, i haven't exactly sorted out a layout as of yet or anything else for that matter so that needs to be sorted, this was purely just me picking up spark just to experiment, just building a theme and sorting out some lighting, the majority of what you see is very work in progress.
I'm aware it's not exactly a lot to see but i would rather get he ball rolling on what's wrong with it fairly early on so it can be sorted.

That first pic is absolutely amazing. I really like the theme too

Nice lighting, all well put together....looking forward to seeing more in this style.

    I like that theme/style a lot aswell.

What I don't like personally is the red in the scene on the pipes (blue, green, yellow is enough)
and maybe that net fence thing, which could be a more clean and futuristic styled one for your theme, but could be that it just pops in my eyes due to the red of the pipes.

Yeah i understand what you mean, those pipes there were just a direct copy and paste from a previous section i had built.

As for the net over the pipes, perhaps i could remove it and place bars over them instead, looking back over it the net covers on the pipes do seem slightly out of place,

Yes, bars are a great idea and might work better.
Just try with a simple railing prop, if it improves the look of that segment.

I removed the red piping and the net covers for them, replaced with the simple mine rail.

How did you make the curved wall in the first pic?

This looks amazing, I think you've raised the bar for me :)

    Thanks :).

If you jump onto the ns_summit thread you will find a tutorial written by pSyk0mAn which could explain it a lot better than I could.

This is great, I'm really impressed. It feels like you've got a sense of some of the style of the Tram readyroom, whilst also having a distinct look and theme that's all your own.

Thanks, I've been playing around for a while trying to find a futuristic style clean-lab theme and while a lot of the maps that are currently in development all look great they just seem to all have the same theme on the go be it either the 'mine' or 'refinery' look, or both.

There just doesn't seem to be much in the way of the 'clean lab' look, but i imagine that will change with future patch releases (At least I'm hoping).

Indeed it looks very unique, I too think all the maps have that same theme, but I think it's because of the props and textures that are currently released... One thing I'd realy love to see on spark engine is white textures or more colourfull, instead of usual grey we see. I know that wouldn't fit the NS2 theme, but I'd just want to see how it would look like in Spark =D

It looks great, but I liked the red pipes, right now everything looks too same-y. Maybe I would've lined them up differently in each section so they didn't look so uniform. But looking great!

Bring back the pink lab textures from ns1, that would be interesting!

An i'm starting to agree with you Mendasp, my g/f came home yesterday and pointed that out almost straight away that it all looks fairly.. bland without the red.

Looks great Janos. That's actually the look I'm trying to go for in the laboratory room of my map. Hopefully we'll get some nice accommodating textures and props in the future.
  • pSyk0mAnpSyk0mAn Nerdish by Nature Germany Join Date: 2003-08-07 Member: 19166Members, NS2 Playtester, Squad Five Silver, NS2 Community Developer
Yes, there is deffo something missing without the red, but I still think it's too many colors, if you add it.
You could try a yellowish light spot/source aswell to give the pipes some "detail".

Anyway, it's just my opinion and you just got started, so you better just keep mapping instead of wasting time on these little things or you won't finish this anytime soon :p
The theme is great, everyone likes it and it's refreshing compared to most of the other shots shown in the forum.

I'm hoping they will introduce more monitor overlays, for the moment when you run around my level.. every monitor says 'Summit', I'm not an big fan of using these huge clunky-looking computer terminals since they don't fit well into my theme.

An pSyk0mAn i agree, i've given up just messing around with the little details for the moment and just focusing on just getting the layout sorted.
  • antarezantarez Join Date: 2003-08-20 Member: 20018Members
Yes, like it better without the red parts. Perhaps some bits of red lighting could turn out fine...

Anyway these screenshots are looking damn good! Perhaps becoming another community-map with potential to go official ?

Just saying, it has this professional style, though its only one room.

For me its like a better version of the hera-theme =)

Looking forward to see more of that!

You know what I miss that red. I was not really in agreement in removing it, but now that I can compare I know for sure it's good.

A map needs contrast, and a colour like red on a psychological level helps players identify different map areas. So I say put the red back in, and use it for only that area.

    Just my two cents

Two steps ahead of you there m8, already put it back in and yeah it contrasts really well next to the blue, orange and green.

It's not entirely finished and i'm still working on getting the lighting perfect, since I've yet to get the layout sorted I'm not entirely sure this will be the marine spawn, but i will see how it goes when i get back to it.
