A possible solution for tech points.
I'm just throwing this out there, and in a way it is a extension of the powernode idea already mentioned in this thread.Thread on powernode alternative

So tech points still are kind of iffy in their use for marines. Aliens have a clearer use for them since they're needed for hives and DI spreading. My idea was to turn tech points into power transformers. You'll completely remove the room by room powernodes as the mentioned thread has suggested. Now you replace tech points with power transformers. The transformers will power multiple rooms while also keeping aliens from building a hive. in order to build a hive, the aliens first must take down the transformer.

That's pretty much it. It would streamline the power node system with the tech point system.

I'll throw it up on getsatisfaction if there is enough positive responses.

I was thinking about this along the same line, but maybe power can be controlled by Command Stations and Hives built on tech points.

Tech Point = a giant power source in the floor

Command Station acts as a shield that Kharaa has to chew through before they can place a Hive.

Hive, once completed, breaks the Tech Point as it does now, unpowering rooms related to that Tech Point (hive leeches power to fuel infestation). If a Hive is destroyed, the broken Tech Point will restore power, but... (see below)

MACs and Marines must first repair a broken Tech Point in order for a Command Station to be dropped (less easy to retake Tech Points for Marines)

Less redundant destruction of Power Nodes but keeps to the idea of expansive aliens vs. marines' main base of operations.

I've proposed a similar idea that instead reduces the number of power points and makes multiple rooms dependent on fewer (more purposefully placed) nodes.

I thought at first you meant the robots, like a power node could transform and jump around and ######, ###### yeah!
