<div class="IPBDescription">"2D-Minecraft-except-not"</div>Seems like i have to make a thread myself, thought you guys would be way faster than me on taking the initative ;).

Terraria is released in steam store, 10 euro, 10 usd or 6 pounds, depending on where you live.
Many people find it similar to minecraft, and I agree that is has similar aspects, but imho, its far from simply being 2d minecraft.

So, discuss! xD

And if you wonder, yes, I think its worth buying.

The game itself is spectacular, for anyone who cares.

    Mnehghhghhh. I wouldn't say spectacular.

It's the first (or second? or third? depends if you count ace of spades) minecraftalike, except it lacks much of the charm that minecraft has. It's pretty clinical, though there is a lot more "stuff" in there. More enemies, more items, more environmental grubbins. There is a fair bit of grind (lolol korean mmo) that <b>feels</b> much like grind, which is the problem. There's grind in minecraft but you don't really notice it.

I have NO interest in multiplayer, whatsoever. The 2d nature of it all, as well as the finite size of the levels, means that you'll never see anything like what comes up in minecraft regularly.

I think it's worth the $10 if you want a spelunky/minecraft hybrid that'll keep you interested for a few hours, but not any more than that.

Just watched that review, its pretty bad. Not only does he state several incorrect facts, but it isnt even very much like a review (more like one of those "lets pretend im doing an review, but with my own sounds and then find a picture of the dev to laugh at").

But yeah, as I said before, it is a lot like minecraft, in the regard that its a randomly generated world that you can destroy and build in. When it comes to exploring caves it feels way more like i am playing spelunky than minecraft tho.

The monsters are also way more fun to fight than in minecraft, sure the gels are more annoying than anything, but its quite satisfying when you finally can summon a 3000 hp boss, and in addition to that manages to beat it!

It is also more of an rpg than minecraft, where you apart from getting some good equipment, also can get more max health and mana.

It has more things that sets it apart from minecraft, so simply stating that it is 2d minecraft is pretty stupid imho ("ohmahgohd, you can mine and build, it must be minecraft!").

There is one thing I dislike about the game tho, it has some extremely unintuitive mechanics.
    Gold is better than iron!
A friend mentioned it while I chatted to him, if he hadnt, I would probably never have known that.

It's not an RPG. You're not strictly required to fight any monster. There are a few instances where rare drops come from monsters, but all the ones I've found I found just because creatures were in the way of the ore I was trying to mine so I had to deal with them. I found minecraft alot more grindy, and WAY more poorly paced. The fighting in Terraria is actually fun. Minecraft is more atmospheric though, I'd definitely give it that. Terraria is rarely scary, if anything, dying is frustrating, not terrifying. Although it hardly compares to the mental anguish you go through losing diamond to lava in Minecraft.

[edit] I called the game spectacular because it stole my life for 2 days. I can't remember the last time a game did that. Minecraft has stolen hours from me, but my eyes hurt from not sleeping due to playing Terraria. It's a really fun game.

You make the light sabers (which actually isnt the best weapon), but the rocket boots are a rare item that you can rarely find in chests located in rare floating islands (visited 4 so far, found 2 baloons and 2 horseshoes, but no rocket boots).

If statistics help you understand how rare they are:
You find them approximately 0 of 4 visits to floating islands which exist around 3-5 per world
    ...
I want my rocket boots D:

Light sabers are made with 10 of any specific gem, and something like 40 meteor bars. Rocket boots are a special drop from Goblin raids.

Censorship on my YouTube? It seems to be a weird taste of copyright claim right there though <img src="http://members.home.nl/m.borgman/ns-forum/smileys/shifty.gif" border="0" class="linked-image" />

I watched that video while it was still up on youtube. It wasn't a review so much as a bashing something to try to be funny. It sounds to me like the guy watched too many zero punctuation episodes and thought "Yeah I could do that" except he has no talent.

I didn't play or buy terraria prior to watching the 'review' so I didn't have any fanboy antibodies built up or anything, but it just seems like a wasted effort. Unless the entire point was to troll everybody who watched it? That I could kind of understand.

It seems pretty mean-spirited, especially for an indie-game that nobody knows anything about and could take away some seriously wrong impressions from it and kill its sale potential. It's different to do it for a game like modern warfare or starcraft or whatever when everybody already knows what that game is. Bleh I'm just rambling now, forget it.

Point is it seems unnecessarily mean/insulting considering the target. Like punching a puppy and laughing before uploading it to youtube.

They seem to punch a lot of puppies on their site. All of these video reviews on there are basically imagination more then review, they are the complete opposite of reviews actually. And most of them aren't even funny, hell most of them even try to run away from funny :D

They regularly use source footage that isn't even from the game in question. They're only funny in their satirical sense.
