I'm aware of Thal's tendency to be the "get off my lawn you stupid kids," guy, but all I see here is a question.

And honestly, IF he's going to be doing it (and he clearly is), let him do it here. He's entitled to it, and at least here it's one less post on a relevant thread.

Its an open beta and they should just update the website to indicate that. As far as I can tell, the only reason to have a closed over an open beta is so you can prevent release of videos/parts of the game via a NDA. Since NS2 would benefit from more exposure rather than less, the 'closed' beta thing was pretty stupid from the beginning.

A little under 20K came from the pre alpha and alpha phase. There are 10K slots for the closed beta phase.

No it's closed, there are limits to the access. Open betas are like free to anyone.
