amd/ati gamma overriding?

I have a 48xx card and I cannot set the gamma in any game or even in the catalyst control center, it just automatically adjusts back to nominal level. When changing the levels the gamma does change, but then less than a second later it automatically corrects back no matter which direction I try to adjust it. Latest drivers already.
