Playing custom maps

Okay, so let's say I have a custom map and I have distributed it to a few friends. Is it possible for them to connect to my server (over the internet) and play a game with on that map? Or is the game/server somehow restricted?

you need a dedicated server. contact one of the server admins and request they host your map, they're pretty nice guys, i'm sure they'd do it.

Oh, no I haven't got a map to test, it was just out of curiosity on whether I could host a custom map game over the internet.
