Allow marines to place sentries

I was thinking something similar to how gorges can place hydras. I would balance it by
1. Making it take up a weapon slot (i.e. replaces the axe, pistol, or assault rifle)
2. Make it cost 2x or 3x (so 40-60 personal res) than the commander amount

Hmm, I'm not sure they need it now that sentries have 160 degree arc. I also like the risk vs. reward factor of using Team Resources.

I didn't actually want to start a thread on this, but this thread should do nicely.

I know UWE has stated that the new Exo Suit will have some sort of Claw on it that's supposed to do something. I was thinking that it could be used to pick up structures and move them around.

I don't think those changes to Sentries' cost will be good for the game. Here's why:

With a high cost of 40-60 personal res, marines in public games will very rarely bother to purchase sentries. This is because individual players will feel they have very little to gain from their investment in Sentries, as Sentries are set-and-forget items, and their direct contribution toward individual enjoyment is minimal. Not to mention Marines carrying Sentries will be very vulnerable if they have to sacrifice their primary or secondary weapons, further discouraging individuals from purchasing Sentries in public games.

In larger games (16-32 player games), Personal Res income may be sufficiently high that some Marines will have excess personal res to spend on Sentries. What will happen is, the Marine spawn will suddenly have 10+ Sentries, which make it very difficult for aliens to attack due to Sentries' overlapping firepower.

These problems are not as severe on the Kharaa side, due to the (res and time) cost of evolving to Gorge and planting Hydras, as well as their vulnerability to Marine AOE weapons.

I think this is what the exosuit is for.

Buy suit and dual miniguns, become turret.

I don't think that marines should be able to get turrets. Mainly because I think building placement is an important commander role and every soldier that gets to place turrets, takes away from that commanders role and affects strategies that commanders might have in terms of base placements.

As long as the aliens don't have an alien-ARC-like-thingy to destroy buildings I think it will cause imbalance if marines are able to drop sentries themselves.
And I'm afraid the aliens will not get such a thingy

    I agree.
Let's see how the exosuit turns out.

symetrical balance is boring. just because one team has an ability dosnt mean that the other needs the exact same ability for balance. what made ns1 so great was how well balanced the teams were asymetrically. the aliens and marines played in such a different manner it was a fresh experience when u would switch from aliens to marines or vise-versa.

The commander would still be able to drop sentries. I am mostly trying to think of a way to make sentries more relevant for supporting marines rather than static defenses. Currently, sentries cost too much and are too weak for a comm to place them any where near the front line.

    really bad idea.

if you want to build things as single player, play aliens.

commanding as marine and aliens already feels the same thing, if we keep copying each other abilities both sides will feel the same.
Plus, this ideas reminds me of TFC, engineer building sentry guns, and the last thing I want is that cartoonish game related to NS.

Having the commander able to designate turrets as 'unlocked' or something and allow marines to pick them up and move them would be worthwhile I think, because they are much better in support of the frontlines than as static defence, but I don't think marines should be paying for them or using them as a main weapon. Just let marines move them around a bit as neccesary.

I like this idea even better. More marine/sentry interaction would be nice.

I like this idea but IMO it should take up the primary weapon slot/take time to deploy/slow movement/not deployable on DI. I don't want a bunch of marines bunny hopping to the hive with 1 guy with a flamethrower and med pac spam the whole way along and dropping 10 turrets then ############ing the hive with shotties or something.

This is the 2nd thread I've seen you do this in. Either contribute or ###### off. -1 to this idea? At least quote someone who is against the idea and agree with them.
