Team of marines versus one fade

<div class="IPBDescription">(like 'The Hidden: Source' HL2 mod)</div>The Hidden: Source is a half life 2 mod. A squad of marine type characters tracking down a mutant human who wields a knife and some grenades. He is almost invisible. If you've seen the predator movies it works a lot like that.

The cool thing was when you saw your teammates killed by an invisible guy and you were the only one left. 'The Hidden' player could also carry the bodies of dead players and pin them up, so the players remaining would see their teammates dead bodies hanging from ceilings. If you watch the video above you can feel the tension building up. Maybe NS2 could have a game mode like that? A team of marines versus one fade with cloaking ability? When you kill the fade, you become the fade :D As a fade it is your job to solely take down the marine team. You can regain health by chewing on marine corpses. Marines would have to stick together and be very vigilant. Imagine the Fade reveal trailer - it would be just like that!

Would it be possible to make a mod for NS2 like this?

Obviously it would be possible, and it might even turn out to be good.

The idea of making ppl have to kill the fade to become it aint the best tho, as then it always ends up being the same players. Better if its something like random or cycling. Possibly even the first guy to hit the fade.

^ Yea I remember that problem. And you get one guy who totally pwns as the hidden character and nobody can beat him.

It could cycle through modes: like one round you become fade by killing it; the next round you become fade by doing the most damage to it; or become fade by hitting first like you said.

I wonder would fade damage have to be increased so it stands a chance of winning?

One big criticism people had for the original mod was that there were no objectives to complete for the marine/hidden team. So sometimes they would just camp in one spot which sucked.

What kind of objectives could the marines have?
-Repair all powernodes (they could hold E to repair so no need for macs).
-All areas of map begin in darkness, except marine spawn. Marine spawn has 4 or 5 mobile powernodes which need to be carried to different parts of the map. Each time they successfully deliver a powernode that area's lights will go on and sentry guns will activate creating a much harder time for the fade to survive.

I like the ideas. Sounds like it would be quite easy to do as well. Need to wait until the "Shade" is in the game, as that'll provide all the cloaking etc. that you need.

For the combat mode, I successfully created a brand new tech tree, with all the commander skills taken away and replaced by a new set of skills (you unlock them by killing stuff and choose them via a menu). You can probably make use of some of that code to speed up your development if you need!

Also I have been looking at subclassing NS2GameRules to create alternate win conditions and override the default settings, it looks very straightforward!

^ The best time to learn, then!
If it's modifying values or existing game elements to get them to work differently, then it's not too difficult. But as far as adding new game elements, I'm still clueless. I hope to have a look at the Combat mod code in relation to the vanilla NS code, and see what's been added or removed, i.e. new game elements.
MCMLXXXIV, I hope you could set out some tutorials for us when you're further along your Combat mod, 'cause it would be great.

About objectives, I think its best made as a map trigger once those are possible. Like, the mapper creates objectives and some logic to issue a win depending on which ones is completed (so some maps might force/allow the fade to do stuff other than kill to win, others would do the same for marines).
But the mod should always let the fade win if all marines are dead and viceversa, possibly also have a timer to end to long rounds.

With adding game elements, do you mean stuff like new entities? Cause you code them like the other entities and then you add a 'Script.load("filename")' somewhere in files that run (I suggest server/client/shared.lua).
To make them appear in the editor you change an xml file, more info in Q&A #2.

obviously the hidden was overpowered and needed to be nerfed

It would be neat if it was a squad of marines vs a superfade in a linear map. Marine start starts powered on with an armory that gives anything for free. Everything else is infeseted. Marines have to burn back infestation and restore power in each room. In the third or fourth room there is the fade's hive. Kill the hive or restore power to win.
