Wikipedia says also that: <!--quoteo--><div class='quotetop'>QUOTE </div><div class='quotemain'><!--quotec-->"Some developers refer to this stage as a preview, prototype, technical preview (TP), or early access."<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Its just how you would describe it to idiots in a common way... but there is no rule that it has to be exactly what wiki says.
IF there was a rule, a LOT devs fail in naming their versions.

im obviously not a professional game tester but by deffinition NS2 is not really in a beta stage.<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd--> Dank, or rather Wikipedia, is correct. This is not a beta stage it is an alpha stage. People arguing against this point either don't know what they are talking about or think claiming 'yes its definitely beta!' will gain them some kind of praise or think it's helping UWE for people to express opinions which defy fact. Everyone has a right to opinion, but if that opinion can be overridden by definition and fact then what good is it?
Although it is 'officially' now labeled beta, going around calling this as such doesn't really help either. It might attract more people to start playing, but when you start using terms that imply things such as near feature-completeness, new players are going to get mixed messages. Might as well just label the game 'in development', 'wip', or another title that can't be misinterpreted.
Obviously using the term beta alpha etc doesn't matter when it comes to engine performance as this is always getting worked on even post v1.0 and most people realize game companies are trying to keep refining their game engines. The problem is that when it comes to what we don't have yet in terms of gameplay, there is quite a lot, and I'm sure many people have gotten the impression that, for example, the flamethrower is going to stay as the marine's #1 game-ender when we haven't even SEEN the exo yet.
This is why many people don't like the term beta applied to this. It confuses those who haven't been following all the planned features from the beginning and the term leads many to believe this is very close to how the game will actually be released regardless of how much extra will go into it before then.
With all that said, if UWE is calling it beta it should be referred to as such, but by definition this is a very misleading statement that can easily lead to premature conclusions about the finished product.

People don't care what "beta" is supposed to mean when nowadays the norm is that 99% of publicly available betas mean "content done, need user feedback for little tweaks, game comes out soon".
Forexample, if a dude who wants a little time off from his usual CoD or something, sees cool Onos trailer and buys the game impulsively for its playable beta, I wouldnt blame him for being mad at it when he learns that the content is far from done, it has no deadline, the system requirements are crazy compared to the advertised + the damn Onos isnt even inthere. Such a guy would still help fund the game, but he will not play it or recommend it to his buddies, regardless of how good it might be now or in the future. a lot if complaints are created through different interpretations and expectations of this term

This was my understanding of the difference between an alpha/beta. A beta is feature complete and stable, and alpha is not. However, these aren't strict definitions and I've seen people call a mostly finished game an alpha or (as in the case of UWE) a partially unstable and non-feature complete game a beta. Personally, I like the RC (release candidate) naming convention because it doesn't lead to alpha/beta semantic problems. If they would have stuck to RC160, RC161, RC162, etc. I think it would have been better.
