The spawn hive infestation

<div class="IPBDescription">anyone else feel it's kind of bland looking =/</div>I booted up NS2 for the first time in a while to try out the new patch and was thrilled to see the first glimpse of DI around the hive. However, I wasn't too thrilled once I got a closer look at it. It's appearance is very lifeless and bland. My first thought was that it might be the graphics, the current look seems like it belongs in the lowest setting. Even on maxed out settings it seemed... meh. My expectations of what DI was meant to look like was based on the end of the first NS2 teaser when the DI consumes the NS2 logo at the end. The way it slowly creeped over with the sound... that's partly what sold me on this game. I understand that it isn't DI as it isn't necessarily dynamic yet but there needs to be something added to give the established DI a life-like natural feel. Perhaps giving it some moving veins or some pulsing sections.

The other concern I have with it is how structures and eggs interact with it. They seem to hover over it rather then mesh into it. I did a forum search to see if this was only a place holder for the real DI but couldn't find any such info. I'm hoping this is all a work in progress but I still felt the need to voice my opinon on it.

Anyone else share my concern on this?

You sort of answer your own question. This is just a texture to highlight that this particular hive is the spawn hive for aliens. It is not Dynamic Infestation. I really wouldn't pay too much attention to it.

Dynamic Infestation might look something like this 'static infestation', who knows -- they haven't finished the effects system and everything is going to look much better sometime soon. Alien structures and eggs will have a cool transparency effect for one.

That isn't dynamic infestation, it's a displacement map with texture on it.

but the spark map editor doesn't have a displacement tool

I understand that it isn't DI but seeing this had me thinking this is what we are to expect DI too look like. Will the real DI have a different look then what we see now or will it just expand from the current spawn hive infestation?

Hmm... the texture could be animated, and have like pulsing veins. Otherwise an area that is already filled with DI will still look kind of static.

no, DI would look like what you saw in the video, I just used a basic infest looking texture that just so happened to exist in the public release from day 1 of NS2's Engine test release, its a very very old texture. nothing special about it at all, just standard world geometry.

Yes the editor does have a displacement tool, its not fully developed so it's not public yet.
