A Game of Thrones

HBO Series preview!
So for those of you who aren't aware:
A Game of Thrones is an epic fantasy novel by George R.R. Martin, the first from the series "A Song of Ice and Fire"

It is a beautifully written fantasy, and probably one of my favorite if not favorite. What I love about it is that it doesn't feel as absolute as, say, LotR. Some people inherently do feel aligned on the good/bad spectrum, but it is much less visible than in most literature (there is no Voldemort or Sauron, nor is there a Samwise) and good people don't have a strength bonus.

Well basically, I urge all fantasy fans to go ahead and pick up these novels, they're quite AMAZING (caps are in order). The plot is beautifully woven, with twists every other chapter, you're just never bored because you know what will happen next.

With that said, I've eventually learned that A Game of Thrones is ready for an HBO series in 2011, a preview has been shown, and for those too lazy to pick up a book, I am sure the series will be amazing.
HBO series are already usually of high quality, but if it's based on probably the best epic fantasy since Tolkien's works, then it can only be awesome.

One of my friends is apparently a fan but the way she described it made it sound like it was almost entirely about people having pretty creepy sex, which kind of entirely put me off wanting to read it, as I already own about half a series that is largely about people having creepy sex and I stopped reading it because of that.

Unfortunately this seems true for many Sci-fi and Fantasy books written for adults.
I don't mind it if the story itself is good, but sometimes I wonder what the authors real motivation was.

No, this is about people having sex.

Not quite, it's not about the creepy sex at all. There is creepy sex, and more than a few pages, however it's far from being the center of the story. This isn't Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
I would even daresay that the sex explains certain characters' personalities.

so the creepy sex is character development?

Can you imagine Calvin's dad saying "creepy sex builds character?"

I am so excited for A Song of Ice & Fire it's not quite funny. Obligatory WILD CARDS (heh) warning; George R. R. Martin appears to be on some sort of crusade to actually shuffle off this mortal coil before he completes the series of books. If you're looking for final plot resolution, you may wish to be cautious. That said, he's my second favourite author, and his books are truly fantastic reads in a genre filled with bad pulp, and I couldn't reccomend them any more.

Nothing like that really. Basically the more primitive tribes have wild sex, the midget has paid sex, etc. Perhaps creepier than you'd imagine (it is annoying to read about a midget fondling stuff) but it's usually a paragraph at most from time to time.

A whole part of the first novel revolves around a marriage and the resulting offspring, it doesn't seem completely out of the way to talk about how that baby came to be.

I do hope the author has time to finish the whole series. He's finishing up book 5/7, so he has the last two to write. He's 60ish, hopefully he can manage to finish.
