Well, <a href="http://www.lua.org/manual/5.1/" target="_blank">The Lua Reference Manual</a> is always a good place to start. But it might also be a good idea to browse through the NS2 Lua-files and make tiny modifications here and there, and see what happens in a debug-session (you can use Decoda for this very nicely), just to get a grasp of things.
