Yes, you can run around and shoot/bite. No, "testing" game flow and gameplay especially for later competitive play is absolutely unthinkable at the current state. There is no way how you can test balance and general gameplay with 20 - 30 fps combined with stutterings and combined with network lag/server lag.

Version 0.02 of another commercial product was not only more playable, but had more content, a more refined engine, and a fraction of the bugs we see here.

id Software is a great comparison. They, like UWE, have a relatively small team. Unlike UWE, id Software is a crap studio that needs to ride on it's former glory to stay afloat.

I've always had high regards for UWE because from a design perspective, NS1 was the second most impressive game I've ever seen and the sixth best I've ever played. Only FreeSpace 2 was more impressive design wise. And only the original Unreal Tournament was superior as far as online play goes.

In other words, NS1 was a freaking amazing game.

So is it any wonder I feel burned by these unplayable builds?<!--QuoteEnd--></div><!--QuoteEEnd-->

Can we just take a step back here for a second and THINK about wtf you're saying. You're comparing a completely modern engine that has to do a million more things at once than an engine developed over TEN years ago! No wonder it's stable there's hardly anything going on in it, no complex lighting, no complex collision and physics.

This thread is just full of people who are either un-aware of what a beta actually is or just trolling.

Finally, they've not even mentioned a release date yet for NS2 so raving and screaming about how the game is sooo terrible compared to x - y is moot as it's a...wait for it..

closed beta, can be everything the developers decided it to be. The one requirement that beta should be more advanced than alpha is given, and as long as it states "closed" you should not expect it running perfectly. all i hope is that when uwe decides to make an open beta (i really hope they do) the game is already very stable and the purpose would be to find more cosmetic bugs (and advertisement of course), so they will not "shoot in their own leg"...

I'm not sure if you can compare ID to UWE.

ID started back in the day when there wasn't a saturated market. I also imagine that creating a game based on 2.5D is a lot easier than trying to keep up with the present technology and every other developer who gets fed millions by publishes.

ID made a lot of money on all its DOOM series. They are probably making RAGE on the funds of those early successes.

Sidenote: The Doom3 Alpha that was leaked got less than 20fps for me at 640x480. I was on a 6600GT when a 6800GT was considered HIGH END. When it came out, I was getting about 50-60fps with higher settings on the same AGP 6600GT.

    Completely unplayable =P.

So many connection issues, it says server full on servers that are empty, you get "connection problems detected" every 5-10 mins and then you get dropped from the game (I think the longest i had without being dropped was 20 mins). Servers frequently crash.

FPS wise i have no issues on high. I am running a Phenom II x 4 955 @ 3.8 ghz with 8 gb ddr3 and an HD 5870. So you should be fine.

Just all the connection issues and server crashes make this game unplayable.
