A new dedicated alpha server.

I've started a dedicated server running the current alpha build on my home system. This system is much more capable than most other systems (rack servers) to handle multiple dedicated servers. I've been wanting to check out the server's stability when ran from a system I know works very well to consider the issues with hydra lag. If you guys would please be so kind to help me test it we could get some good statistics over to the UWE team for benchmarking stats.

I'm not going to give the IP, but the name of the server is "n00bfest.com".
Thanks guys, and the game is coming along really well/fast.

After testing, it appears that all servers, including mine run extremely poor after about 8 hydras are built. After building, destroying them does not fix the issue.

I'm not really sure why you think your system is somehow better then a 'rack system'. 'rack system's are designed for power first, and other things second. Your home pc, not so much (think cooling, noise, power usage, etc). And, a real server has a better internet connection then yours.

    devicenull +1

Desktops will never out perform a rack server

hmmm, my little 1U quad core blade runs about 6 servers without breaking a sweat and it's at home....does that means it's a hybrid?...lol

Any machine is fine but is better when its running an OS designed for hosting like winSRV2008 etc.
Problem with hosting from home is with your connection.
Unless your spending a fortune on a special line hooked up to your home your standard broadband connection only has a fraction of upload speed available compared to your download speed.
256 up (Max) normal average is about 180 and its easily spent. not enought bandwidth and headroom to keep everyone updated when running multiple bandwidth hungry apps. Besides that even with just enough capacity in your pipeline, your pipeline is rather slow compared to industry connections that are directly wired to national hubs as opposed to your home connection jumping through about 10 substations before getting to a "Shared" and slow hub commonly used by (in UK) Sky, TalkTalk(? Claim they buy their own dedicated ports and their not out of business?),TUCAN, AOL etc.

Companies like BT, Virgin, BU? and so on buy their own dedicated private connections for their customers (way more expensive broadband) but still go through subs.

How many you pass through depends on where you live. I know some people who are Plugged directly cause they live on the right street and get 5ms, FIVE ms!!!

I run a core i7 extreme with 16 gb ram. i run broadband through fios. quad cores can kiss my ass. i throw things at this pc that ive seen rack servers throw up at the sight of. ive dealt with many, many servers.. and i still havent seen a really good dedicated out-perform my 8 cores. im not saying its not possible, im saying for the budget... it's not. ive poured about 6 grand into this machine, but the purpose of the test was to see if such a great machine made an impact on known issues. im not trying to boast about it's performance. nevertheless, the server is still up and running.

i had one crash yesterday, due to hydras, other than that... it's been running like a champ with four other dedicated servers running.

one problem im seeing through performance logs is that one cpu is being ripped apart by the engine, while the other cores are either idle, or minimal. peak cpu usage doesnt reach above 13 percent, which is good... but i think it could be lower.

What kind of connection do you have?

If you are running an i7 extreme it is either a hex-core 980X or a 9xx quad core. Which means it is LGA1366 and triple channel, which means with 16Gb you are running it out of its proper memory mode, with some odd combination of DIMMs.

Of course it may have been a mis-type, but if it's not it might explain why you are crashing with eight hydras. I have played on servers with more than eight hydras and they haven't crashed, including on my own system.

Also, if you have fibre optic link with server-quality upload speeds I envy wherever you live!!

Anyway good work on putting up your own server, the more the better! I wish I had a spare machine to put one up.
