I'm slowly getting my wife (BTW I got married last month! :D) into games using casual games as a gateway drug. Recently, she is hooked on Breakout and Mahjong for the iPhone, but she wants to play on her desktop PC. Are there any good freeware versions of those?

Also, I assume you mean Mahjong as in the match 2 tiles Mahjong that isn't actually Mahjong.
Here's Mahjong: http://freeonlinemahjonggames.net/
and Breakout: http://www.2dplay.com/break-out/break-out-info.htm
If you're looking to make a jump into more interesting games, I recommend Puzzle Pirates. It's a free MMo where you're a pirate (big surprise) and get loot via pillaging and crafting, all by playing puzzle games in the vein of Dr. Mario or Bejeweled. Great tutorials and varying difficulty based on how good you are. Plus, casuals can get into the cuteness of it all.

Google "<game> free download" (w/o the "") and you find things.
