Quick mockup for an idea I had, when you look at a marine for a second or two they could be highlighted for a second with their name, health and weapons and accessories.

Perhaps not as visual as the picture but the idea is there.

Maybe in a white text up top or to the left of the screen, they just have to make sure it fades instantly when not aiming at them anymore. TF2 hp indicator is also pretty good and especially usable for the medic and much easier to pick up their HP status compared to text based systems.

The reason I also like two horizontal bars above their head much better then text. Very slim bars as well, similar to most RTS games for example...

White or green bar for heatlh: 100%-20% health
Turning into a red bar: <20% health

Blue bar for armor: 100%-20% armor
Turning into a yellow bar: <20% armor

The horizontal bars also lends itself very well to put their nick-name above them and their head... With these bar indicator that also change color, it is much easier to see who needs welding or protection, while also keeping the HUD clutter at a minimum. I think a similar system should be used for the aliens, what with Gorge healing and all.

Commanders should also see these of course...

i think the NS1 health bar circle on the ground at everyone/everything's feet was nice.

also, the commander could see these bars easily without having to have a different system.

the real question is, should we hover people's name's over their head on mouseover? takes away from the skulks sneakiness if you get a red name popup when i mouseover vents and such.

Hehe, of course it should not be visible to the enemy team... The circle on the floor is good for the top-down perspective the commander has, but it is quite annoying having to look down to the floor to see the HP bar in the FPS view. HUD clutter is the only concern though when using bars or textblobs above heads

Ya we need it like they have in Alien Swarm. This way you can tell their health, armor, and how many magazines they have left :P

Cool idea, but yeah, I'm with Kouji. Bars are better than numbers.

I think that information could be displayed more concisely and less intrusively then a big colored rectangle. Their name (with no rectangle) above their head and a round pie-slice bar around their feet would obscure much less area and present almost the same information. Their gun/ammo status can be observed by looking at their gun.

In any case, the feature should be optional.

I like the idea of having the colored overlay over the model when you look at them. you could expand this to include information on health and armor through colors, such as a green color for high health, fading to a red color for low health. armor could be done similarly through the color of the border around the character.
