Traditional adapted for ns2 gameplay
What started off as a remake of an all time great took a few turns. I took the basic layout from ns_bast and changed it up a bit making some areas smaller and some bigger. Here is the kickoff thread for the map. Keep in mind i want the old school feel on known ground and will most likely wait for some more textures and/or models before i expand the area @ bottom right.

If it hasnt got an Inclinator, an underwater section, and a revolving door, its not Bast.

Can you move in so we can see some more detail? At the moment it's a bit difficult to see the resemblance to Bast right now. How close are you hoping to make this?

There is no need for this. SN.Wolf is just as entitled to feedback as any other member of the forums. Your disapproval is not sufficient grounds to lock a thread; in fact moderators carry out tasks on their own discretion, not on the suggestion of forum members.

In the future, if you don't like something, please leave constructive criticism rather than delivering instructions to lock threads.

Well firstly, it's based on the fact that you simply can not recreate an existing map with out the permission of the original creator. Secondly, there's nothing to see here.

As i can see this is not going to go over well with this community. I am perplexed as to why i would need permision to build on a layout as it is not a mirror of the original but just following the general landscape,(planned on crediting for inspiration) If it helps i will change the name and keep the post to my own forums at the sake of everyones sanity and just so it goes no further i do ask that the mods close this thread as i can see nothing but flames and ill regard towards anyone refering to any original map, may it be by idea, layout or name.

Just to clearify, the original layout won't work well with the change in gameplay> Bottom Line.

Truely troublesome to see such a non-supportive community and has actually changed my views at who people really are behind the maps.

@ uncle ray--> sorry, you where offended.

You see, the problem with your original post was simply a lack of information. I mean from that screenshot, we can't judge or see anything interesting to comment on (constructively)

You mentioned a layout based on bast, but with less hallways, while decreasing it's overal size... That's all fine and dandy, but the screenshot is just too far away. Why not show us shots from inside the rooms instead?

    ----
I just made that image to see what each room you've made could represent. But even so, I wasn't really able to deduct much from that and was basically guessing... If you want to showoff a layout, make sure you do so from the top down.

About remaking a map, I guess trying to get a hold of Relic25 the original author would be pretty hard. But it is usually common practice to either get permission or just use a different name... Mendasp is the big boss now on ns_bast, dunno what he wants to say about this

I never knew Mendasp took on bast after Kevin passed and intended no dis-respec towards the map or anyone involved in it. I was asked by several people if these maps where going to be brought back and my responce was yes and no. They will be back but not the way we know them. Maybe i'm not the most talented at NS mapping and i will admit that as most of my skill set is behind server customization and 3d modeling for the trackmania series,bf42(mods) but i was willing to give it a go. If the map never makes the cut it's not a big deal as everyone knows that it is only respect for Mr.Roberts for making a big impact on what NS was all about and how he inspired the Players to follow his lead.

After reading your post i tried to contact mend via a mutual friend and got the good 'ol mail return on the email i sent.

Anyways here are the screens---> Name Pending I supose.

So it seems like you're going down your own path as far as the rooms themselves? Are you going for a Bast theme? Perhaps you could have your own layout and location, but follow some of the visual and spatial themes of the original. There would be no issue at all with that - Bast was a cool map with a great look and it would be cool to see someone attempt something similar.

If you go that way, as well as looking at Alien I'd suggest also looking at modern military vehicles for inspiration. Aircraft, warships, submarines, that sort of thing. Maybe even modern spacecraft too. Relic25 used or updated some of the textures he made for de_deep6 (a submarine base) in ns_bast, and as a result it's strongly reminiscent of the kind of vibe you might get from, say, a submarine interior, but extrapolated into a large spacecraft.

It would be a sweet look for an NS2 map. You might need some extra art assets, although there's certainly no shortage of pipes to be going on with.

Yeah so this looks nothing like bast
  • HarathanHarathan Join Date: 2010-07-26 Member: 72845Members
Maybe it'd be worth just calling it NS_Hybrid and give up the Bast pretence altogether.

As per sugestion advise the name is changed to NS2_Hybrid but since i was inspired by bast from the start to follow some of the layout, not to scale or location. I will still give credit to kevin and everyone involved in Bast for the inspiration to tackle an editor for an entirely different game.

Good call mate. Bast with your own unique flavour, much better. You could also potentially play on the Hybrid in the name.

You can use NS2_Hybrid by the way, Im not copyrighting my idea or anything :-P
