AFAIK Games open up a lot of connections when ping-testing the available servers. My very first router (~year 2000) couldn't handle those connections and crashed (rebooted) sometimes due to this.
Probably just what your problem is, I don't think the devs should care - Decent routers cost like 40-60€...
Yeah, make sure your network is fully switched to outrule collision (This includes disabling any wireless AP functionality within your network). Once you have done that do a test run and it most likely will run fine.
If not, look for sources of potential network problems: Old cables, cables running along power lines, poorly configured network-devices. Cheap network devices. Inhomogeneous network hardware (mixing enterprise switches from different vendors that each have their own proprietary protocols).
There are alot of potential errors sources. So without an proper description of your homenetwork all I can say is:
Experience tells me that its most likely a not fully switched network segment causing the trouble. Usually a wireless AP.
