Make server.exe a standalone file (non-steam dependent)

I've been in touch with a few server hosting companies I've used in the past in regards to establishing a game server for NS2. The problem lies in that you must have NS2, and you must have steam running. Obviously this creates issues for these server hosts. Using a VDS is a pain to control game servers and if this file was made available it would cure some of the headache.

Just my two cents!

Yeah, I get the feeling this will be an eventual goal especially when they want Linux Servers.

I second this as I am wanting to setup a dedicated server for the community ASAP. Don't want steam running concurrently with Server.exe .

What the hell... server.exe needs steam to be installed? /groan - why the hell? So every game host now needs to buy a copy of the game?

Greeeeat... what a stupid implementation. UWE - please read this <a href="http://www.mammothmedia.com.au/downloads/Mammoth_Dedicated_Server_Guide.pdf" target="_blank">http://www.mammothmedia.com.au/downloads/M...erver_Guide.pdf</a>

I'm sure we will see a true DS emerge later.

Also, you don't need to won the game. Many have claimed they got it running just with a running (logged in) Steam account.

Thanks for replying and confirming that Max. It's most appreciated. I'll get the word out in the Australian NS community.

Well, that's a plus. I'm glad to hear Max say they'll be changing the way server.exe works in the future, though.
