Yeah we're seeing that problem here too. Still trying to figure out what's happening. I did notice if I turned on port-forwarding to the machine that was trying to connect (behind a firewall), it ended up working. However, the game was acting like it was super-laggy so I'm not sure that is the proper fix.
Update: OK I think we know what's happening. We're not filtering listen servers from dedicated servers in the server browser. Whoops. So any server you're trying to connect to is probably behind a firewall, which would cause the black-screen and timeout. In cases when the server is not behind a firewall, but is still a listenserver, it probably doesn't have the bandwidth to handle many players.
That's our current thinking, we'll keep our ears open!
Main problem for me with this, is the inablity to return to menu. I can end the connection and retry/connect to a new IP using console commands, but unless there is a command to return to the menu it means exiting the game and re-booting.
I am having the same problem, it just hangs on the "attempting to connect" black screen so I have to ctrl-alt-del close NS2. I am sure it will be resolved soon.
Not sure why people would get upset with this, it is the alpha after all, this is the type of thing we are here to work out.
I get the issue of Attempting to connect as well, though it changed to authenticatin after a few minutes, but then stays on that and nothing else. I am able to host myself though.
Edit - Looking in the console on my end, I am getting lots of "Error in packet" messages while it holds in the authenticating process.
On the server side of this it looks very interesting.
I set my server up a.s.a.p and just about 3 seconds after that it was as if the world was dieing. I've never seend a commando prompt run that fast.
Server Side observation: Incomming connections never get rejected. Even when the server is full - Resulting in maaaaaaassive incomming connections - Each connection seemed to retry to connect to the full server ~50 times. - Massive lag due to this.
Edit: rolling out a server with password to see how it fairs. PM me if you want a PW. if I dont reply, you havnt got one.

That doesn't explain why when i run a client server, it is still laggy even for me. keep up the good work.

You too? I thought it was just Steam doing it's thing, didn't even pay attention to the fact it was when I first ran the game. After checking, it was TF2 and CS:S that both had downloads initiated at the exact same time.

This is exactly why it's in Alpha :P
I too get this error; I also get a black screen trying to host games.
