Are you suggesting the dev team needs to spend a half hour or more to make such a display? I mean first they need to design a new font with sprites (maybe even 2 fonts, unless they can make a scalable font with vectors or something)... Then the code to place it + set the build string ... (and hopefully they keep track of release dates + version numbers, or else that means more code to write [ and time to do everytime they go to release a new build to the community ])... and lastly test... and lastly a several hour compile?

Right now they are fully inundated coming up with new twitters every hour or so :P

I think build numbers have less meaning due to steam keeping everyone at the same version.

Build numbers are useful because you might be in game during an update or updated and trying to join an unupdated server. They also let you know when the last update was so you know that there was an update (i don't know if they're going to put in silent updates or every update a huge announcement) and you don't have to complain about a certain bug 100x until next update.

I thought the point was the giant <!--sizeo:7--><span style="font-size:36pt;line-height:100%"><!--/sizeo-->ALPHA<!--sizec--></span><!--/sizec--> in the middle of the screen.

Yeah.. I don't think that the ALPHA text is large enough. It should block at least half of your screen.

I never understood why people are either

    1) So curious as to their build number.(Your steam should be updating regardless.)

    or

2)It says it when you hit console.(How do people not know this!)

-sorry I necro'd this by accident-

Good point, although the point of your point could be increased a few points to point out the fact incase they may have missed the point.
