Alpha Performance and optimization.

<div class="IPBDescription">Need more info!</div>So im guessing a lot of people are worried about performance for the Alpha.

I mean, i have a 6800 ultra its old and still working on getting money for a new rig.

But that doesnt seem to be the issue really for performance wise, it seems to be something with the engine itself.

My friend has a BEASTLY computer, like top of the line with the best products as of this year, its about a month old.

Still gets very very unplayable poor performance in the engine test, which im sure a lot of people have.

Although some get incredible perfect performance on lesser computers.

i mean using r_shadows false in console DRASTICALLY improved my performance in the engine test on medium at 1280-1024, around 20 fps but up from 5 at least.

Engine test wasnt expected to be optimized, neither is the alpha, im just hoping its playable at least.

If people are worried because im sure everyone that pre ordered is overly excited and cant wait to play i pmed max about this and got this response.

"Yes we have, the engine is quite a bit more optimized than the last build we released. The catch is that there's a lot of game code in this one which isn't fully optimized, but we're still working on that!"

I dunno if any more devs could give more insight on engine performance as the alpha release stands, would be nice to further reduce all this excitement towards it haha.

What info do you want, exactly? You already got a personal PM from Max telling you that they've improved some things and added some things that will detract from performance.

I hear multithreading is in, so hopefully that provides a nice boost along with the other on going optimizations.

I really hope NS2 doesn't end up being a system hog. NS is one of those games that needs to be absolutely smoooooooooth on a wide range of PCs.

We're hardly going to release an alpha that people can't test. Sure there will be performance issues, it's an alpha. But nothing like the Engine Test.

i think it's common sense it'll run poorly, maybe bit better than engine test but still pretty poorly, that's just the way alphas are.

The gameplay will be rough and there will be glitches, but I expect actual performance to be much better. The core C++ engine is where the compatibility issues resulting in low performance on very good PCs, etc., are coming from. That will likely be much better.

Alpha just means there will be gameplay code. Gameplay glitches shouldn't affect performance much except in some extreme cases like an infinite logic loop, which I imagine would be patched quickly.

i'm sure it won't be pretty for a while. There will be tons of inefficiencies happening like poorly implemented logic or various debugging code or various statistics gathering elements that otherwise would not be in the game. I expect that somewhere in beta there will be time to start multithreading the game and to really start cranking on the optimization.
