paper that uses onos models
So while at work I bumped into this research paper with an image of an Onos. I had to post it. I'm sure the tech heads around here will find it a good read. I myself haven't read it yet but will later.

http://graphics.cs.williams.edu/papers/PhotonHPG09/

Kudos to the author for using UWE models. I'm sure you must be around here somewhere.... professor.

Well based on the author, subject nature, and access to pre-release models, I'm willing to bet they're kin to our very own 3D programming guru, Max. The subject matter seems to be on a less-expensive form of ray tracing called photon mapping.

p.s. It's like looking into a mirror (if I were Max that is).

Either Max has a twin, or he has a hairy alter ego. Either way, that's some impressive work.

Yay! NS2 is going to have awesome lighting.

Unless this is just the cast aways from the Mcguire family's genius mind, and there are even cooler lights in NS2.

EDIT: Awwwwwww. It's a glass bunneh. Watch the video, everyone.

I saw his name but failed at realising he has Max's last name. [EDIT: Actually I was working at the time of the post and had to move on quickly (because this lucky coincidence had nothing to do with what I was googling for) so I just posted it here quickly so I would not forget to see it later and also it's relevant to NS2].

They must be brothers! We are in for some serious lol's if they are twin brothers... In which case Max would surely be the evil bald one. Oh noes! ...Onos? It's ALL coming together!

Anyway I might need to apologize to Max for outing one of his family members. He will surely now suffer from Max's fame and be constantly haunted by papa... paparazzi! Anyway being from the champion breed that he is the professor must suffer from his own fame in other circles less familiar to us.

    ...

    random eureka!

Judging from the SIGGRAPH video, in particular the limitations section, I'm going to guess and say that the Spark Engine uses this method for its dynamic lighting system. The limitation of the Photon Volume getting clipped by the camera which makes the light go away (this is noticeable if you go towards a wall at a funny angle with a light source nearby, in the Engine Test) is the same issue that the Spark Engine seems to have.

Pretty neat stuff at any rate.

Well, it actually glides on the photons.

A little bump to this: I just stumbled across a video demonstrating the findings of the paper:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GckOkpeJ3BY

    Enjoy!

Edit: Forget it, I just noticed that all the videos are on that university site anyway. Anybody know how to delete a post?

    I laughed, pretty hard.

Guess I am just a science nerd, after all :(
