The Specialists is the only mod that comes close to challenging NS.

NS is far and away my favorite HL1 mod, #2 is DOD. You have give CS the nod as the most popular overall.

Listen to this man. Even completely alone fighting bots on your own listen server is ridiculously fun in that game.

I would have recommended the original Zombie Panic, but unfortunately the only server that was still running is now gone.

Yep, it was fun but i replaced our server with L4D 2 and since then that game even lost interest do to never ending waves of zombies rushing at you over and over again so just like zombie panic it found it's way to the recycle bin, dedicated server and all.

Hostile Intent was an interesting take on Counter-Strike-style play. I'd be surprised if anyone's still playing it, though. People are still playing TS.

Wasn't HI a Source mod? Or am I thinking of a different mod.

Front Line Force and Firearms were superb but I doubt anyone still plays them :(

There are a few pretty entertaining singleplayer mods too if you're feeling like some retro FPS adventure. If my memory serves me right, both Poke646 and Azure Sheep are pretty damn awesome and fun to play. Poke646 does amazing tricks with the old engine. Azure Sheep is more conventional SP mod, but it has really nice flow and design. If you liked HL singleplayer back in the days, you'll probably enjoy both the mods.

I think most of the Firearms people moved to Source.

Similarly, all the Zombie Panic moved to the Source version and L4D.

Did anyone besides me play Desert Crisis? It didn't live terribly long or have a very big community, but I loved it to bits for letting me backflip around corners and melt someone with a plasma cannon (or blast them into the stratosphere with a grenade launcher, or just pop their head off with a deagle)

I always preferred Action Half-Life to The Specialists, but maybe that's just because I played AHL first and fell in love with it, not necessarily because it's better. It is a less complicated game, though, which can be a plus. Also I don't know if there are AHL bots.

Did you know you can throw knifes at each other and make them hit the other knife, funny bug

Or maybe do some Boondock Saints serial crushing, yep you can actually kill someone by crushing them. Jumping off buildings with a grenade is funny as well (suicide attack :P) Or a grenade that was shot by a bullet, exploding in mah face

Lovely bugs... The only thing it has against it for most people is the random bullet spread... I don't mind as it adds to the movie like stunting and jumping and shooting thing... But some people just want their bullets to stay on their crosshair, ah well :P

That brings back memories... I mostly used to run around with the silent slippers and hand cannon, doing silent diving shotgun kills - it didn't get old

There was a sweet Vietnam mod called "Tour of Duty" - I could never find Aussie servers, but I had great fun playing that, even with 180 ping.

VC sapper was the BOMB. You could be such a smartass with trip wires and demo packs. And there was a nice variety of maps.

Also, If you want a more light-hearted mod, does anyone remember "Boxwars"? basically, there were two teams of boxes (yes, actual boxes) with different class roles. Anyway, both teams were put in a map full of boxes... so the challenge of the game was to try and work out which box amongst the enormous pile of boxes were actual enemy players. Weapons were typical box-destroying devices: nailguns, saws, flamethrowers etc. ^^

Hehe, I sometimes play ahl still with two guys in Deathmatch. When someone gets their hands on the Handcannon+slippers combo it immediately turns into a TDM vs the handcannon guy. Some awesome creepy moments for both "teams" (who is the real hunter). I can even move silently without the stealthslippers if I need to, can't keep it up indefinably cause me hands start to hurt after a while with the buttons combos in quick succession :P Pretty funny to sneak up on people, who are using the only slippers on the map.

They also started and even released a V1.0 for Action Half-Life 2 for Source. I wasn't too impressed by it. It somehow lacks the charm the goldSRC version has...

Oh this one is pretty weird and cool at the same time:

    Afraid of Monsters (singleplayer)

    Some more:

The Ship, which no longer has servers running... There is a Source version though (costs monah)
    Decay, ported from playstation (singleplayer)
BrainBread, zombie survival, with model dismemberment (single and multiplayer)

A different SP mod which uses the original dialog in a near perfect fashion is "Mistake of Pythagoras", made by some korean guy. Some unique puzzles and boss fights, impressive ending.

I like how in the space of a page in a thread asking for multiplayer HL mods we've made it to single player HL2 mods.

ah man! i forgot about FLF and firearms!! FA was flippin awesome back in the day. I was bad at it, because i was a lot younger and less coordinated with the mouse, but still... awesome mod.

I also played one called "The Opera"... very Woo-esque in it's stunts and gunfights... kinda similar to AHL

There were some REALLY good HL single player mods. They Hunger, Heart of evil, anything Halfquake, Assault on Roswell, poke646, and others I probably can't remember.

There was a good puzzle mod, but I forgot the name of it.

Yeah it had something to do with your velocity vs the other (victim), making these rare from above crushing possible. I even crushed someone when I got launched at high speed from a grenade blast towards another guy, splatting with him into a wall and I died by an environmental death... Very weird and also very rare, but funny none the less :P

The knives hitting each other is something I've only seen once. The engine obviously has no idea what to do with it, making both knives with the points against each other float very slowly up or down :D
