It worked for a while. Until we ran out of numbers and resorted to adding GT and X and stuff.

Now just pump a number any "major" change occurs. Ding! New Product to buy!

Or just rebrand old stuff :P But on topic, sure, DX 10/11 may offer some benefit. Sure, maybe most ppl in the steam survey have DX10 cards. The problem is, a lot of us still have cards that are technically DX10 cards but are far too weak to run DX. DX11 cards are coming out now, but it almost never pays to be an early adopter. The simple fact is that DX9c is a solid standard (again, I'd prefer OpenGL myself), and it will do NS2's Sci-Fi environment just fine. NS2 needs to be available to the largest number of players possible and the dev team shouldn't put in a handful of fancy graphic bits and throw out chunks of the community. Also, anyone commenting that the engine is slow at this point doesn't have a good grasp of development :P Last I checked, the engine isn't finished, which means it certainly isn't optimized. If we released ESF (the project I'm on) today, ppl would complain about how slow it ran since we haven't optimized much of anything in terms of maps and LOD.
