Admin Ability's

So me and my Clan have run several game servers spread out over serveral games. ( like CS:S TF2 BF2 COD etc )

Mayor problem we had was the ability to manage our servers when we tried out a new game.

Alot of Devs seem to forget ( or dont care ) the admins that run the server keeping cheaters, ######, racists etc etc out of there game.

hence the comunity brought forward mods to go with the games.

like ManiMod or BeetlesMod.

My suggestion is, Please put some stuff in so that i dont have to minimize my game to ban or kick or warn someone.

Dont make me update my mods everytime the game gets an update ( tf2 anyone? )

better yet. dont make me have to find a mod to admin our server.

Things like warn, kick, ban and the ability to change maps plus voting would be enough. to fully run a server.

kthxbye

All that is possible in TF2 W/O server plugins/mods.

    Even map voting.

(Not trolling, it really is possible.)

Also warning is useless to have as a command; just type your warning in as a server message. Or just kick them with a message attached. Or just don't skill-ban people, problem solved.

I entirely support the game shipping with good admin tools rather than a half-assed one and having to wait for someone else to make it for them.

    Yes, please.

I doubt a simple admin interface would be a particularly hard thing to do for the team, and it should provide great return in game looking much better in actual on-line play.

I'd rather see them spend a little time writing a clean LUA Api for these features and let the community develop a plugin for it. They need to concentrate on core functionality.

In other words: How long would you have them delay the game release for these features?

Well I think current HLDS'es rcon functionality is good. I just hope it would not be password-based but user-based authentication. So adding SteamID's to some file would grant admins all the necessary access. Even a better solution would be to have a command to set flags (64-bit variable will do) for users. A auto-executed CFG-file called bans.cfg or whatever could set the flags for all users who should be either admins or banned. Rest of the flags could be used for community's custom stuff.

Rcon is imo. a must late-feature for remote-scripts and remote-admining. I use them with HL1 to control HLTV's and they're a must. I don't really mind doing this with a external LUA scripts but there's one big issue and that's many server-hosters don't like game servers setting up listening ports (they don't have them forwarded etc) out of official requirements.

Command-wise all you need really is userlisting, kick, ban (add, remove, list), restart, mapvote and ability to change cvars. Writing a nice in-game API would be nice because now you basically have to use HLSW to able to kick troublemakers in time. Stuff like mapvotes, gags, slaps, slays etc. are not necessary, either let community to code them or add them in a later update.

I think a plain API is an elegant solution, but it doesn't sound that good if you have to install an extra package just get a hooligan out of your server. Simply said there could not be a public server without a 3rd-party-package. I'll rather have few basic tools (listed above) and let community develop the rest. Best would if the base would be modular enough to extend to other authentication mechanicsms and more commands without having to implement the base system again.

A year. Longer. I don't really care - we've already waited forever and it's already been super-loltastically-delayed. And it will be delayed again. Using .lua as an excuse to half-ass a game so your paying customers can spend their time finishing your features <b>for free</b> is idiocy.

Proper admin tools are as much a required aspect of a game as any other. This isn't a free mod anymore, you know.
