Portal 2, Steam, etc, coming to Mac's.
<div class="IPBDescription">Steam come to mac (OpenGL)</div>It's official, Valve's digital distribution service Steam is coming to Mac, and bringing Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series (along with Source) with it this April. But there's more.

Probably the most exciting thing about that (to PC gamers) being Source now supporting OpenGL. I can't imagine the support being particularly impressive or quite as well-implemented, but it can open the door to some neat new technology and overall better support accross the board. Or at least it's amusing in the geek sense.
Big Kudos to Valve for doing this, and doing it right.
Because almost everyone else sells products for different platforms as separate licenses, so, for example, if you want to use MS Office on your Mac and your PC you need to buy it twice.
Steam Play = PLay the game on both Platforms
Steam Cloud = Access your save games from either platform.
Haven't seen anything that suggested that goldsrc was going to be ported. But if you want to port both, I might be willing to buy you an iMac ^^
If it does release, will UWE be willing to commit a few moments to any possible changes to NS1 to make it portable (assuming any issues arise)?

Sounds like great news for all the Mac-using NS fans out there!
goldsrc I thought already had OpenGL rendering available. Or, at least that's what my Video settings claim when I fire up NS and HL1. That being said, the OpenGL of NS is a bit buggy, and I imaging goldsrc might similarly be either buggy or discontinued?
Buggy?
I was honestly under the impression that it was the other way around. For as long as I've played goldsrc games, I've always ran the OpenGL version.

Yeah he got it the wrong way around - it's DirectX that's buggy in Half-Life/Goldsrc. Half-Life 2 is all-DirectX (or was, now it's not). I hope that Valve will at least let us choose whether to use DirectX or OpenGL in the ported games.
Hm, weird. Last couple times I setup systems I had to make sure everyone was on D3D settings because otherwise it crashed the comps (either that or my memory is going faster than I thought). Or it could have been crappy drivers since this was setting up a LAN on school comps.
Now I have to go check what I have on my own personal comp.

I may never install windows again if I can play steam natively under Ubuntu.
Mind, even if Steam is supported under Linux, not all of it's games will be.
But yeah. Hell, I'd install Linux again if that was possible, even if every distro I tried so far craps out on me.

I wish we could buy preinstalled linux(that wasn't some homegrown half-baked attempt). This machine came with Linpus Linux, and I switched it for Ubuntu (Intrepid Ibex at the time, now Karmic Koala). The only fiddling I had to do was to get the wireless card to work properly and installing wine.
Do you mean you hope Valve will let Windows users choose OpenGL on those games which will be dependent on it for their Mac port?
/EDIT- That way those Wine users would have it easier too, I guess?
