<div class="IPBDescription">A fantastic method to keep the slate clean.</div>Valve's meta-server keeps track of players in/out of a server, adding points for players that stay, and subtracting 15 points for players that leave.
If a server's points are above 0, they appear on the server-list, and are blacklisted once again if they go below 1 point accumulated.
Do you really want your meta-servers to be used as billboards and bogged down by servers with hacked player-counts?

But yes, great idea. Fake servers will always be an issue as long as you allow people to run their own.
Thank you for that clarification. (But now I must wonder how they're dealing with the advertisement servers)
Also: Fake server's aren't really a problem if you've kept track of player identifiers (like the steam id).
For example:
[Fake server] - 30/32 has posted |0
Skulk has connected to [Fake server].
Skulk timed out (error). |-15
Skulk has connected to [Fake server].
Skulk timed out (error). |-15 (ignored)
Skulk has connected to [Fake server].
Skulk timed out (error). |-15 (third attempt, server is blacklisted, rectify)
Player Skulk from FAVORITES remove [Fake server]
But yes, if you can identify players properly somehow, it shouldn't be too much trouble to devise a system like that. As far as we know, NS2 will have CD-keys, SteamIDs and IPs, so... There's hoping.
