Cannot connect to servers

I used to play this game a few years ago, but now I can't remember how to get in a game. I have been using steams server browser and it shows a good deal of open servers that require no password and have room in the game. However when I try to connect them the game boots up and it attempts to connect but never does. I have already forwarded the neccessary ports that are applicable to steam/half life but I have no change. Also, the in game browser returns no results whatsoever. If anyone sees this and can provide input it is appreciated.

Sounds like hl.exe is blocked in your firewall.
