try to use the open menu within the editor. opening the file with "open with.." will result in black textures. If you already did this or if it doesnt solve your problem, i got no idea why that should happen (maybe you changed the default install location?)

Installation location should not matter, although it is default.

Doesn't matter what method I use to open the files.

Two bugs I've run into have dealt with scaling props in perspective mode. (1) When scaling in perspective mode, and using the corners of the object, the object is also rotated along some axis. This is unwanted behavior, as the scale tool should only scale an object. (2) In the same conditions as before, when the object is scaled to its original size or larger, the objects simply vanishes as though it were deleted.

In this GIF, I'm manipulating the forward, upper-right corner. I've only noticed this happening on <models/props/refinery/refinery_fan_rim_02.model>.

It should come along by the Beta, I hope.

Make sure the lights aren't in the walls, and the wall it is going through is actually connected to all the other sides. Zoom right in on the top/side/front views and then hit the z key, now slap the [ key till your grid doesn’t go any smaller. Finally make sure all the lines are on a line, same with all the points at the ends of the wall.

Does anyone know how to get the spotlights working. I did have them working for a while and they work when I am in Texture Unlit. But when I switch to Texture Lit, the editor crashes out with no bug report screen, I did see the bug report screen for a fraction of a second once. Also, where are the bug reports stored, maybe then I could email them off or something? I’m getting a little fed up of having no spotlights :(

Yeah I had that first issue. I think that even happened on Hammer sometimes. Just get used to it, it might get fixed, but its not a big issue. You could try scaling it in top/side/front view, see if that works.

Based on the GIF, I would say that the second issue is because the model is not designed to be stretched from one corner point that much. Try stretching the whole model equally (hold the Shift key) when it is in its default position. Then do your rotation. Some models don't like being stretched too much because of the detail in them becoming too distorted.

...Hmmmm, no that is a lie... I just looked at both fan models and stretched them to **** and nothing worked, made them a million times bigger than they are meant to, and they still didn't disappear.

....mmmm... try stretching them further, maybe they just disappear at points. Try different ways of resizing/stretching them... Try resizing them in the edit screen, see if they disappear. Try doing it all when you have just turned on your PC and straight away when you turn on the editor.

One of them might work.

EDIT: Yeah, I started getting that issue on one of the fan props. I found that going into the Top/Side/Front view and editing from there works well. Don't use the yellow dots, just the red/green/blue lines. You'll just have to line it up with the grid to make sure it is the right size untill this bug is fixed.

I have an issue with attaching things to eachother... I made a small sample hallway, fairly simple... about 20 verticies in total. When I copy and paste in order to connect the two this happens...

As you can see even on the most detailed zoom at the highest grid setting the verticies are still off-grid. Its a fairly universal issue... I can extrude and have have fun all I want, but whenever I want to copy a peice and use it elsewhere in a level this happens...

I'm not sure this has not been posted before, but I don't feel like reading through the entire thread.

Whenever I place a prop and rotate it 90 degrees round the Y axis and an arbitrary amount around the Z axis, the Z rotation will change sign every time I use the move tool on the prop (drag along any axis). This gives the impression that the rotated prop 'flips' every time I move it.

I haven't extensively tested other axis or rotations, but I am able to reliably reproduce this in every prop I have tried.

Anyone else?

(On a side note: Scaling the prop after the rotation will make the prop disappear. My editor crashed as well.)

Edit: Clarification and new spelling errors.

Drag from the edges instead of the gizmo so it snaps to the vertices of the other side. Click and drag on the edge you want to "merge" (with everything selected) make sure the axis locking is locked to the right axis (it's highlighted) and press shift, that'll lock the geometry to that axis, and then hover over any vertex in line with what you want to align (with shift still pressed).

I don't know if the explanation was clear, I think this should have gone in the tutorial.

well, try this:

1. Select and Ctr+C then Ctrl+V
2. Hitt "M" to swtich to move mode
3. Hold down Shift and click the link of the arrow(green, blue, red) you wanna move.
4. Go 4 window mod or what you like, as long it's top, side, front.
5. Hold "Alt" and click the arrow to match up the wirefram of the selected object.
6. There you go.

If that dont help, well den i dont know.

I noticed a bug when rotating props:
Sometimes selected props are rotating in the opposite direction than they should. Whenever you use the movement tool after that the prop changes its direction between the "wrong" state and the state i should have been rotated every time you click/move.

Can anybody try to confim this?
Easy test:
create a prop (let's say a door) and rotate it to 0,90,90 (via gizmo or select/edit, doesn't matter).
Now use the movement tool, the prop should change direction every time.

Also: having a couple of props selected and trying to rotate them will sometimes not rotate the "group" as a whole but each part in it individually. Don't know how to reproduce this one yet, however.

All textures appear white. Models can load fine, sometimes they don't, sometimes they do. Lights also don't work as they don't actually light anything up, but make some white spots.

Edit: I can only add models in wireframe mode. And I can only add one model without it freezing up.

Oh I forgot. The First post in this Topic about the fans shadow casting problem!
I have found the exact same problem with wall textures where I have made a room that has a window and basicly I have built an outdoor scene with a light_spot that acts as moon light..
Problem is that [b]without[b] exterior textured walls the light just poors in from the back of the internaly textured walls.
The problem with the solution is that if I build the exterior walls and most importantly the roof to block the light that is comming in everywhere instead of just the window!..
then it is going to block commander view .. no..??

This applies to other things like if you place fans with lights behind then the spot has not got to overlap the model or it will bleed throught the back of the wall its in unless you made an exterior flange.
This is no problem though if you have made your fan in a tunnel, but i didnt want no tunnel for it but i may be forced to make some double sided shutes for the square fan.

I didn't have this problem the first couple days I was using the editor but now I am getting a blue screen of death fairly consistently when switching between tools.

I assume my video driver is being affected. Does anyone have the same problem or a fix?

This is not a bug when using the editor, and honestly i have only a slight clue as to what it was supposedly downloading. However, as you can see my download exceeded the supposed file size. I was messing around with some settings on windows 7 (dealing with access notifications) while it was downloading, and after it had finished and went to install, it didn't have permission to install. So it failed. I clicked something else, causing the update to fail a second time. My assumption is that when I did do the update, it downloaded the files three times. The update was successful though. Not a major bug, and definitely not one that at this time has seemed to cause any problems. I will report back if it has.

I can't make it do that. If I drag from the opposite corner or use the line tool it makes a face that extends all the way to the end of the room covering the gap with the light model inside.
Same happens if I draw two lines, it automatically creates a face just like with the rectangle tool:

If I drag from the opposite corner or use the line tool it makes a face that extends all the way to the end of the room covering the gap with the light model inside.
Same happens if I draw two lines, it automatically creates a face just like with the rectangle tool:

what are you trying to do in that picture?

Anyways, the one I have is more or less an art asset issue.

I'm currently trying to set up scene where you just have a spotlight projecting the shadow of fan blades onto a wall.

I'm using this blades model as my shadow casting object: models/props/refinery/refinery_fan128_blades.model

Here's my lighting set up as viewed from outside where player would be (spot light going through fan blades)

Here's the back of the light setup, where the light is (note the missing center piece which doesn't have back tri's on it)

Here's how the lighting comes out

When I'd rather have this

To get that, obviously I just rotated the fan blades so the back face was pointing out and center section was facing the light, but obviously now the player doesn't even see the center piece of what is casting the shadow.

Overall though, I'm loving the editor and its simplicity. Extrude = love! Great work Max!

Also, as a suggestion, would it be possible to have the properties window for objects always be shown, at least as an option? Even better, could you make it a separate window entirely, so then the editor becomes more multi-monitor friendly (then I can have the viewports on one, and the properties and reference images on a second monitor).

You notice that your fan is hanging in the air? Make a cross or something on the behind witch holds the fan so it makes sense and fixes the shadow.

ok im about to list 3 bugs

1. walls creating
alot of walls that are connected will not make a face even if you highlight all the lines and say create face

2. editors crashes if you make 2 walls come together that have this problem

3. also why cant the walls be double sides textures because then anyone that look down or what not can see right though it

1: Sometimes the face is created on the opposite side.

2: Never encountered this myself

3: Make an extra face and force it to the other side (CTRL + F with face selected)

There, double sided wall :)

The prop "models/props/refinery/refinery_pipemods_01_rib64.model" appears to have a rather unusual origin. It's nothing like the other props in the "rib" family, and making things line up is hard because of this.

Here's a fabulous screenshot. (Well, two screenshots on top of each other, pipes are placed largely end-to-end).

This might not be a bug, but I find it strange.
